Why can't my Panasonic DVD recorder read my portable harddrive? I want the DVD record to read the harddrive?

hi anonymous, it may well be that you need to change settings on your DVD Recorder and/or on your TV. On my LG 42" TV I need to select the input mode ie. Movie, USB, music etc, as necessary. Maybe your DVD Recorder or TV can't handle the file format on you Portable Drive, check the manufacturer specs.

I have an LG RH1888H HDD/DVD recorder with a dodgy hard drive, can I replace the hard drive, if so, with what and is it an economical repair?

Keep trying assorted hard drives made in the same time period as the set top box. You might have to use the jumper setttings on the drive. Although I got an old 4gb drive to work in it.
And be reassured. That 90% of the drives you try in it, will fit. But it will not allow you to put the front cover back on, unless you do some cutting work.
As for hard drives:
Better off using seagate drives like the one inside of it. I found this set top box one of the easiest set top's I have repaired as of yet. It was found thrown out! Manual, remote, the works!

I also use a lite-on DVD burner inside of it because it's more-fragile-than-fragile DVD burner faulted. (Would not read disks, but laser was active in original disk loader)
And PLEASE handle those ultra-thin IDE cables inside of that thing with EXTREME care! They are glued to the bottom of the HDD and DVD. So peel them off slowly and gently.
-Peace

Want to replace hard drive

Replacing the hard drive is relatively easy. If you have replaced a computer hard drive, you certainly can do it. My DRR-E80H hard drive failed and I was looking for the exact same brand and model to replace it. After seeing how much people were asking for them, I consulted with a tech friend and decided that I could use a different type of hard drive. The original is 80GB 5400rpm I believe, but I used a 60GB 7200rpm that I had sitting around. Booted up and it formatted and has been working for almost 2 years. Just remove 4 or 5 case screws, with power cord off and removed of course, and you will see the hard drive. Easy to get at. Now, as for my dead DVD drive.....

DMR E80H hard drive

DMR-E80H Hard drive problem seems to pretty common. My drive started making the famaous kerchunk noise tonight. After disassembly I see the drive is a ATA133 Maxtor drive....are you sure that you replaced it with the correct drive? I may contact Maxtor and try to get an RMA since the drive is only 3yrs old. Good Luck
