Can you identify the device's name? Specifically, can you identify the laptop make and model? It should be printed on the bottom of the laptop, usually on a white sticker.

That would depend on the burner drive and if it has dual layer support built in. Look on the front plate of the drive tray and look for DL somewhere near the DVD letters. If you see a DL then it will burn double layer disc. You would also need to have blank Dual Layer DVD-R discs. It will not burn dual layers on a standard 4.6 GB DVD it would have to be an 8.6 GB DVD. You will also need a burning software that has Dual Layer burning support.

Ah, the Dual-Layer Problem. Well, first off, you bought an LG. Problem solved!!! ASUS, Pioneer, TSSCorp, Sony, ASUTek USA, or any other brand OTHER than LG is good for burning Dual-Layer DVD's. And for God's sake, LEARN how to use Nero Ultra Edition for your burning needs. It has a technology called "BUFFER." you should really read up on that bro.

What video format can it read?

According to the manual, http://www.jensenmobile.com/mobile-multimedia/?sku=VM9216BT under the Support/Manuals tab, the VM9216BT reads VCD, SVCD, XVid ,AVI, MPEG 1/2 formats. Commercial DVDs will work if you match the device Region with the discs region code. (All or Region 1 in the US). The DVDs should be DVD-5 (single-sided, single layer), DVD-9 (single-sided, double layer), DVD-10 (double-sided, single layer) or DVD-18 (double-sided, double layer). Note: video CDs and DVDs, like audio CDs, need to be finalized by the drive that burned them.

I hope this helps.

I had burned the data in double layer DVD in Nero, after successfully completing the burning, when i try to open it is showing the space is Zero, please suggest me in retreiving the data which was burnt.

have a good look at the disk you burnt make sure the data has been burnt to the disk
sometimes nero will say that the burn process completed successfully but when you check the disk itself there is nothing on it
righ click on the disk select properties you will be able to see how much free space you have
you would have been asked if you wanted to save the data in a certain folder after the burn
hope this helps

I have Mad Dog MD-16xDVD9-EXT. It says it can burn double layer dvd at 4X speed. I have dvds at 8X speed. How to burn at 8X speed with the existing burner? Need advice. Thanks

The bad news is most likely you will not be able to. If the specification for the device is a max 4x speed it most likely won't even be able to use the 8X media you have. You have to match the media to the device. All the specification data I find on the device indicates it writes double layer disk at max speed of 4X. It will write single layer disk at 8X.

Hi i have a dell laptop with a HL-DT-ST, DVD+-RW GT10N burner. can this burner burn the DVD'sthat are more than 4.7 GB

Yes as this drive can Write/Burn DVD's so any type of dvd can be burned through this, Note: Not the Blu-Ray disks if you are thinking about it.
You can burn Single Layer, Double Layer, Double Density Disks through it.

What does "multi layer support" mean. Does it write multi layer discs? or is it able only to read them? Also, what is a lightscribe?

Multi-Layer support means the drive can Read/Write a Dual-Layer discs.

Lightscribe means you can create a label on a disk.

Check these Links fro more information:

If you are asking for the information regarding the ODD here it is: DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) with Labelflash? drive supporting 11 formats * Maximum speed and compatibility: CD-ROM (24x), CD-R (24x), CD-RW (4x), DVD-ROM (8x), DVD-R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVDR (Double Layer, (4x)), DVD-RW (4x), DVD+R (Single Layer, (8x)), DVD+R (Double Layer, (4x)), DVD+RW (4x), DVD-RAM (5x) * Supports Labelflash? media to burn high quality labels directly on the disk. If not ( Cant read CD or DVD ) then most likely the lens on the ODD is already busted. or ODD cant be detected then just go to the Website support.toshiba.com and download the latest update for the ODD. And install the driver on your NB and restart the NB. If still the same then the ODD you have is already busted what you need to do is to buy a new ODD.

If this is original equipment inside your pc then go to the website of who made your pc and check the spec's. If the burner does not say
dvd-rw, DL, then no it is not capable of burning a double layer dvd disk.

Only dvd burners with Double Layer DL DVD R Media compatibility are able to burn the Double Layer Media. If your dvd burner does not have the capabilities, it is possible to be upgraded to burn Double Layer media, check your burner manufacturer for details. Other ways to say it is DVD+R DL media, Double Layer DL Media, Dual Layer Media, and DL DVD R Media.
