It goes into protection mode because 90% of the time its an internal fault with the power supply or a faulty driver, output transistor or possible capacitors gone bad on the amp board.
It will not trigger protection because of no speakers connected, that's nonsense.
It's rare to trigger protection mode with 4 ohm loads or slightly below.
It will trigger protection under short circuit conditions.
It could be entering protect mode because it has no speakers wired to it, have you tried connecting to all 6 speaker - out connections. Often, if an amp can't detect a load on all 6 channels it won't work. Also, have you checked the thermal fuses? a blown fuse could cause this problem.
