Is it trying to eject the tray when the OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed? If so, then the tray is probably out of alignment/jammed. If the drive shows no signs of life at all, then it is likely the drive is defective/dead, and will need to be replaced. A new DVD-RAM drive could be expensive, plus the labour costs on top, would make this uneconomical.
I do not recommend that you disassemble the DVD drive (if the tray is stuck) unless you have a schematic 'exploded' diagram of the drive itself (showing each part separately by name and/or number) along with a service manual on alignment procedure. Unless you have experience with these, you risk further damage.
On the other hand, consider ordering a new DVD drive (they start around $130US (cheapest for a new VXY1961 DVD-RAM drive - which suits this model) and upwards plus shipping). Prices may vary depending where you obtain the drive from.
It is easier, quicker, and possibly cheaper to simply replace the drive rather than try to fix the old one. If you do go ahead and order the drive and fit it yourself, you save on workshop labour costs. You do not need to remove the front face panel of the combo unit to replace the DVD drive.
The good news is at this stage you will NOT need to replace the entire combo unit; if you do visit a repair centre, get a quote on the costs involved, and a second opinion - particularly about your DVD drive. You can also ask them whether a new disc drive is required, and where to obtain a new one from. They may be able to assist you further. The purpose of the second opinion by a workshop is to enable you to make a concise decision as to whether to simply replace the drive yourself or accept their quote for service. Up to you.
I hope there are no other faults within this unit.
