Right click Desktop click Properties
Check that the resolution is on your normal setting and Colour Depth is set to 32bit
It might be worth checking you have the latest drivers for your graphics card
You can download Driver Genius Free Trial it will tell you what drivers you need for your Graphics
Then you can google them and download them
I think though what you are describing might be the ribbon cable attaching your screen to the laptop, this ribbon cable passes through the hinge of the laptop and sometimes constant moving of the screen up and down can damage the ribbon wire if it is not placed properly.
