Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Hey guys, I'm having an issue repairing an XBox 360. The stupid thing originally had error 0102, so I reflowed the GPU. Now I have error 1021 (e73) (-_-') I tried to reflow the southbridge as it is likely an ethernet related error, but thats just the problem. I reflowed it, and still, E73. Now there is a chance that i screwed up because I did a dry reflow (no flux), or that I didn't reach reflow temp, but before i go anyfurther, i need a definitive answer: Is the problem the southbridge chip? People say it is, but I think its bull; the Southbridge itself does NOT produce enough heat by itself to come loose. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Edchen

Try replacing the DVD rom cable that connects to the motherboard.

You will be surprised how much this fixes a lot of E73 issues

    How will THAT help?

  • Eddie Chen Apr 07, 2011

Also, that shouldn't make a difference. The DVD drive has NOTHING to do with E73. E73 means that there is a major problem with the Ethernet/Southbridge area(or so people claim). I've turned on plenty of consoles without the DVD drive plugged in without this problem. In fact, this is the first time this has happened.

I used to work in a repair centre for a very popular computer games company, a lot of the codes reference to the exact problem, however sometimes we got the odd console that defied logic, and after many people trying different solutions, we sourced that replacing the data cable to the DVD rom solved a lot of e73 problems.
I would suggest to reflow the southbridge chip again, but you would already know to try that.
I just wanted to mention something you wouldnt normally try.

Ok, I'll try that then. Don't know what that will do to help though. Which cable? the SATA cable or power cable?

  • Eddie Chen Apr 07, 2011

And during the southbridge reflow, should I flux it this time instead of a dry reflow?

  • Chris Nice Apr 07, 2011

    The SATA cable

  • Eddie Chen Apr 07, 2011

Ok...nothing. Should I reflow with flux instead of a dry reflow this time?

  • Chris Nice Apr 07, 2011

    Dry reflow

Be carefull with reflowing to much, it will kill your console.

One more thing to try, is check the ethernet port for dirt, as this is another common problem with E73

If all else fails, replace ethernet port, although this is not easy.
