Question about HP dvd1170e DVD-RAM Burner

1 Answer

Hi Have a HP DVD1170E drive and attempting to Use it on Windows XP SP3. Sometimes when the drive is plugged in the usb port you get the message saying there is a problem with Windows Recognising the device and if you click on the link to resolve the problem the device comes up as "Unknown Device" in the USB / Generic devices in Device Manager. However, sometimes the drive is picked up. Its very inconsistent. Tried different USB ports etc but still get same issue. Drive is brand new. HP Website doesnt appear to have any drivers or firmware for the device and cds that came with the drive were just nero burning software. Any ideas?

Well how can it be new? (new old stock you meant)
or new to you?
its at least 10 years old.. an old Desk top drive.

this is all there is now, they are deleting this section now.
Questions of the day.?
why run a 3year old dead,OS XP?
its dead, that means when you need drivers its going to be hard to impossible to find or will by found but will be full of VIRUS.
upgrade to w7. (buy a retail license for it and use it)
(ask how)
no system stated, just a DVD #
cant help much with that.
To make DVD and USB work right on XP it needs SP3.
service pack 3, but finding it can be hard.
no stores sell it (brick) no disks marked XP with SP3 now.

plug it in to a new machine, say w10 laptop or desktop
if it plugs and plays that means windows still supports it.
and if true may work with W7 too.
then try it on w7? learn where it can work and where not.
and save all this grief.

SOURCE: USB

First of all, I recommend you to Uninstall the USB Devices from the Device Manager and reinstall the Chipset Drivers as per the instructions below :
Click on Start and then on Run.
Type devmgmt.msc in the Run Command box and click on OK.
This will open the Device Manager window.
In this, click on the + mark next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers which will display additional USB Entries.
Right click on each of the entry and select Uninstall.
Click on OK if you get any confirmation window. Repeate the same process untill there are no entries left under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the Device Manager window.
We are done with uninstalling the USB Drivers from the Notebook.

Now, restart the Notebook and close any window which says 'Found new hardware'

Now, download and install the Chipset Driver in your Notebook from the link below :
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/8178/a08/infinst_autol.exe

Save the file in the Notebook and double click to install the Chipset Drivers.
However, if the issue with the USB Ports persists, I recommend you to check again with different devices to confirm if the issue is with the USB Ports of the Notebook itself.
If the Notebook doesnot recognize any of the USB Devices after installing the Chipset Drivers, you may need to get the USB Ports of the Notebook replaced or go with a PCMCIA USB Card.
Hope this helps....

If you know how to use bios, have a look for a setting that enables usb this maybe unchecked, if this solution doesn't work try getting an internal usb card fitted as your onboard ones maybe damaged. Have you tried to installed the motherboard drivers for usb.

hi this is a problem that some older systems suffer from as the windows is updated they expect that the system is capable of using the update, but as experience has shown that does not seem to be the case, infact quite the opposite as some older systems can not get hardware upgrades such as laptops, which are stuck with the hardware they have, normally this shows that you have USB type 2 in your laptop as a 3 year old system would have, but the system updates try to change the port settings to accomodate for these changes and on some systems ( not all before someone says ) it just does not work...hope this helps ps. personal opinion, get another laptop, preferably not HP..

Just purchased, and trying to install HP dvd1170e DVD-RAM Burner. It is recognized, but cumputer running Windows XP does not fine driver, and dvd1170e is not functional. How do I solve this?

These devices require software to burn DVD's and CD's that is NOT just a driver...

A driver is not enough... typical software is NERO and other such as CD Creator, etc..

A DVD is quite different than talking to a USB memory stick or even a hard drive and you can;t just copy a file to it like you can a hard drive.

Typically using programs such as NERO, you copy to a list within NERO and when you tell it to burn the disc, it gathers all the pieces you have selected and goes about the operation...

This is just an error message. Yes, your HP Pavillion has USB 2.0, but there's a possibility that your USB flash drive has USB 1.1 specs.

If the flash drive has USB 1.1 specs, you would still get the same message. Again, this is just a message because USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with USB 1.1.

Have a great day!

The only other solution other than rebooting is to remove the cable from the usb port and reinsert it. Sometimes the computer will recognize the drive and it will work properly.

NO OS STATE is this the XP virus maget , dead for 3 years now?
XP does not work on many USB devices even after the SP3 update
and THE SP3 UPDATE is mandatory. service pack 3
DV2000
id bet you if you booted to linux CD, (knoppix 7 live)
all usb ports work, telling you what, in seconds, XP IS DEAD.
for a fact.

google XP USB dead, (billions of hits for 16 long years)
MS dont support this OS nor VISTA or older.
HP does not support DV200o now its legacy hardware now.
MS plug and play is dead too on XP. per there warnings.
The means all new XP things will be dead, if the maker of said things
does not give you Their soft or that thing..

if hell bent on using XP ,(why) upgrade to W7
then get SP3 there.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55245

it came new with XP
and was VISTA READY, best is to go W7. !

Goodwill store has $20 laptops with W7 on it working now.
why wait, dump yours, and UPGRADE HW/SW all at once
and WIN.
why to not RUN XP (endless bad and advancing....)

Hi there.

Try re-installing/updating iTunes, also, make sure that you have run Microsoft Update and have all the latest updates. With regards to your new drive, download and install the chipset drivers for your motherboard.

If you can tell me what motherboard/system you have, I can look and post the link for you.

Hope that helps.
