You don't say what make and model but you may find a manual on www.sewusa.com, www.sewingpartsonline.com or www.sewingmanuals.com .

Check your top tension dial, turn it to zero and clean between the discs with a selvage edge of clean cotton offcut. Also take off the needle plate and check it for any burrs or damage around the needle hole that could be catching the thread. I assume it is the top thread that is breaking? Check the threading path from the thread spool, down to the needle visually to see if there is something damaged or catching the thread. Does the machine have an aerial arm, and if is, is it lifted up? Also, the thread spools themselves sometimes have a little nick in the edge where the thread can catch, so use a spool cap over it or turn it up the other way to ensure this is not happening.

Good machine maintenance tips, troubleshooting and threading diagrams are at www.sewing.about.com.

Hope this helps a little.

Elna 2005 I don't have the manual. Which setting is for the stretch stitch?

A special stretch stitch is not required to sew stretchy fabric. All one needs is a zig-zag that is wide enough and close together enough to allow the fabric to stretch without breaking the stitching thread. (Test it on a piece of scrap fabric you are using, give it a good tug and see if the thread breaks.)

NOTE: be sure to use a ball-point needle. A sharp needle will tend to cut the fabric threads and your stretch fabric will eventually develop holes and runs commonly found in knits.

There doesn't appear to be a manual for your machine, however, you can usually find a manual close to your machine model and the instructions will be similar enough to suffice. Perhaps you will find one with instructions for sewing stretch fabric:

How do i get a straight stitch on my golden touch & sew model 640 machine

Check for diagrams on the selector wheel and then adjust your stitch length. Do not set to tight as your thread will break

Zig-zag settings

you probably shouldn't be using a zig zag for that application. But the multi-stitch zig zag.

Please look at page 40 of your manual for information.

As for needle breaking check to make sure your need is the correct one for the thread and fabric. Also make sure your pressure foot is the one recommended for the stitch. Consider this... most thicker fabrics require a longer stitch.

What would be a "stretch" stitch setting?

For a stretch stitch use a narrow zig zag stitch. Use a ball point needle with knit fabrics.

My machine skips stitches, and the thread wears at the needle, causing it to snarl and break. I've looked in the manual and tried everything they suggest.

This sounds like the thread is not in your take up lever, are you sure that it is threaded correctly? Maybe it is wrapping around one of the eyelets or the take up lever rather than just going through the eyelet. The fact that the thread is wearing at the needle is indicative that the thread is too tight when the needle goes downwards. Is your top tension set too high perhaps. The skipping stitches part is normally indicative of either a blunt needle, using a sharp needle on knit fabric, or the timing is out slightly.
You should be able to trouble shoot the first two options. For the timing, will it sew a zig zag stitch at all? If timing is out or you've tried all the other trouble shooting; I'd suggest a trip to the serviceman.

I just took my 7400 confidence singer machine out of the box. After trouble threading it and breaking a needle, the bobbin case came out and I not only can not get it back in properly, but I never...

Where did you buy it? Didn't they give you a manual? You can look at your manual online for free at www.singerco.com and enlarge the diagrams to see how it is supposed to look. If, you still have trouble call Singer at 1-800-4singer. Good luck

Thread breaks and skips stitches

Open the needle plate, remove the bobbin and bobbin case.....refer to your manual.

Clean away lint and threads.

Thread with the presser foot up.

If this continues, take the machine and samples of the mis-stitching in for service. It could be the timing needs to be adjusted by a professional.

Might be that you need to lower the tensions quite a bit, you'll have to juggle with top and bottom tensions though, and experiment for just this operation with the Sensormatic.
