Question about Tascam Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Folks, My Tascam 42B reel to reel has a pinch roller that is shredding its black rubber in a gooey sludge. Not pretty. Can you advise on a replacement source and cost please? I love this machine. Regards, Mark Perry

Reel to reel will not play

You do not mention the brand or model number which to answer the question effectively is needed- different machines are designed in different ways. The function of the fast wind and the play mode only differs in that in play a capstan is involved that regulates the speed and the reel motors just do the take-up of taper and a little back tension for the supply reel. You may have either a sticky Pinch Roller linkage or a non- rotating capstan shaft that might point to a loose or broken capstan drive belt. There are also the condition of the Pinch Roller surface and the surface of the Capstan shaft that can be glazed or rubber hard and non-compliant. The rubber Pinch Roller can be re-rubbered, the capstan shaft can be reconditioned and the Capstan Belt can be replaced. Capstan bearings and motor bearings need oil once a year as well. I hope this helped to some extent- I have been working on decks now for better than 40 years.

Hi James,
I am a past Teac Technician. The answer may be a bad capstan belt- is the round metal thing rotating that makes contact with the rubber Pinch Roller? These belts become lose over time and the DC motor become defective in time due to wear- Before they burn out they can be serviced but only by a person with knowledge about how to take them apart. Otherwise the part can be $120 plus installation. I have not seen sticky Pinch Roller linkages in these models so I will say it is probably not that.

Tascam TSR-8

It might be availble but if you have the old one it is more cost effective to have new rubber put on the present one as sent to Terry Witt in Michigan who has done many rollers for me in my professional service business. I have had him do rollers for TSR8, 38, 42B and many other units. It cost about $35.
Go to the web and type in Terry's rubber rollers. There is a Pdf form to fill out and then just send in the roller- about a week later you get back a perfectly new one.

Common problem with this camera, the codes reflect reel sensor errors. The first thing to check for is when you open the cassette assy look inside to the right is there a black rubber kinda tall wheel like roller? The pinch rollers are known to fall off of their posts in this model. If the pinch roller is there then the mechanism needs to be replaced. Hope this helps. email me for service if needed.

Tascam midstudio 644 powers up and can rewind and fast forward.

You have not mentioned the model. Hope you have checked the belt and the motor that drives teh main capstain and the reel drives. If this does not work then replace and proceed. Also the pinch roller could be defective and not holding pressure to the spindle. Check the roller for hardening of the rubbers. replace if this is faulty. I hope with the set loaded with a tape you can find which drive is not spinning to take up. This should be able to confirm you with the right section. Hope this helps. Good day

I have a Sony TC 630 Reel to Reel Stereo Tapecorder..Pinch Wheel is sticking and will only move when forced and brushes as well...Any help ?

Sounds to me like your Sony has a common problem among vintage reel tape decks..dried /frozen grease/ and or a lack of lubrication. carefully apply a tiny bit of fine lube oil, like 3in1, on the swing mechanism that carries the pinch roller...(you may have to remove the front metal deck face to fully access the swinging pinch roller mechanism) ) . do NOT get any oil on the rubber pinch roller..(best to make sure after by scrubbing the pinch roller surface with a cotton swab lightly dipped in non chemical household cleaner, like 409, or awesome orange i get at the dollar store. Then use the dry end of the swab to ensure the pinch roller is dry. .The pressure pads should swing upward and press the tape against the heads when in play/record mode..if they do not swing up, they are binding/ or out of adjustment....they are spring loaded so when the reel deck is in the stop position the spring loaded pressure pads are held down...play/record mode releases them to freely swing up and press on the tape against the heads.

The unit is eating up the tape!

Generally speaking, there are two reasons this happens.

[1] tape recorders have to move tape past the record/playback heads at a highly consistent and accurate rate of speed. What makes this possible is a rubber "pinch" or pressure roller and a spinning metal spindle. Tape is routed between the roller and the spindle, and when the recorder is in RECORD or PLAY mode, the roller presses the tape against the spinning spindle, causing the tape to move from the feed reel to the takeup reel. When the pinch roller and/or the spindle become coated with oxide particles shed from old tapes, they get sticky and the thin tape will begin wrapping around one or the other. THE SOLUTION is to get some cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol and clean the oxide (brown from cheap tapes and dark gray from better tapes) from both of these parts.

[2] many tape recorders use rubber belts and pulleys to turn the feed reel and the takeup reel. If the tiny rubber belt that makes the take-up reel turn is stretched, it will not wind moving tape fast enough, which causes tape to bunch up. If this is the problem (you will not be able to see the belts without removing the recorder's outer case), then you might as well junk the recorder.

If you see that the part of the rubber drive roller that contacts the moving tape has a ring of brown or gray coating on it, you

Recording Speed

the tascam 414 is a 4 track recording studio which uses standard cassette tapes- meaning they only play in one direction, because the tape is full. The 414 records at double speed so that recording fidelity is increased. When you have made a recording you want to mix you then dub your recording though the outputs into another standard tape recorder or whatever you have available, be it a cd recorder or your PC. So, when you listened to your recording on a standard tape player, you were not only hearing it at half speed but you were only listening to 2 of the 4 tracks. The other tracks would only be heard if you flipped the tape over, and they would be heard running backward. I would have though the 414 had a swich to allow it to also record at standard speed to but I guest it does not.

Threading reel to reel

Depending on which brand of recorder you have, most do have a general threading scheme. As you are facing the unit, the supply (full) reel would be on the your left and the take-up (empty) would be to the right. Position the supply reel so that the leader end of the tape will be on the outside. Pull the tape end around the shut off sensor lever so that it moves freely. Now pull the tape leader between the rubber pinch roller and capstan (in the case the unit has dual capstans). If it has a single roller on the right side, pull the tape between the heads and then between the roller/capstan. If unit has dual shut off sensor levers, pull tape around this sensor as you did the first, making sure it moves freely. Then thread the tape leader into the take-up reel slot. Press play. Both reels should turn counter clockwise.

Tape is stuck in VCR- Fast rewind and forward

It may need to be cleaned. Mechanical problems are one of the big problems with VCRs they use alot of mechanical moving parts and play for so long they fail. Plastic parts dont help much either. The pinch roller takes up the slack and is usualy the part that fails first because it constantly runs along the tape and builds a coating on the rubber so it doesnt grip the tape and pull it back into the cassette. If its not pulling the tape back in then it hangs up inside and you cant get the tape out. Fastforward uses the reels to pull the tape not so much the roller. Try and stop 2 times then fast forward then eject the tape. Try and eject the tape while its fastforwarding so it doesnt do anything else. Sometimes machines will unload after its been in fastforwad a while then it will eject. You will hear a change in the sound when it unloads, you can hear the mechanical arms move the tape in and out of the cassette. Thats when you eject it. You cant really clean it till you get the tape out. YOu can clean the pinch roller with fingernail polish or paint remover. It is a wheel inside it looks like a black tire. It pinches the tape against the capstan arm this is why it developes a film or a shine on the rubber making it slip.
