Question about Televison & Video

Open Question

I have acquired a Emerson PL-P42w-10a plasma that will not turn on. when you press the power button on the remote the red power LED flashes once for every time the power button is pressed. I am assuming it is the power supply, but I can not readily see any burnt out capacitors or resistors. I have seen that there are two 250 v fuses on the power supply board that seem to be insulated with ceramic rather than the traditional glass could these be the issue, or is it the whole board, or something else?

SOURCE: I have a Emerson plasma

Hello,

The issue you describe is consistent with a power supply board issue. This is the board where the AC goes to. This problem may have occurred as a result of irregular power supply, or excess power supply or power surge.

The TV is receiving current but cannot circulate or transfer the current to other necessary part of the TV because of the defective power supply board.

I do not think it needs replacement, rather some defective capacitors are causing this issue.
Open unit up and take a look at the power supply board. You will probably see one or more electrolytic filter capacitors that are bulged up in the top-not perfectly flat like the others.

The value of these capacitors will be different, most likely they will be somewhere around-820 to 2200uF/25 V( or /10V sometimes)

You can replace them with same values but I would recommend the voltage rating to be higher(like 35V for an original 25V) for reliability purposes.

What happens is,these bulged top capacitors will cause a low and unfiltered DC voltage=main board will malfunction(the relay will keep clicking until the caps are holding enough charge to bring the voltage up over a threshold point).

You can buy these capacitors at any Fry's or Radioshack store or you can order them online at vendors like "mcmelectronics.com"(look for electrolytic capacitors).
After replacing these capacitor(capacitors) most likely the normal operation will be restored.

Note: There may be also some other causes for this symptom ,like a defective T con board ,or main board, but the bulged top capacitors are the most common cause for this issue.

If you don't know about TV repairers, take the TV to the nearest repairman to fix the fault for you. Also, note that TV stores a lot of current, so wait a while before opening the TV back cover.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

I have a Emerson 42 plasma tv. model # PL-P42W-10A When I plug it on the 2 small rectangular components near the bottom of the power supply click and the standby light on front of the tv blinks 5x.

So, your TV does not come on? That part is not clear to me. I have seen TVs that do just that but is normal. Some machines have internal codes reflected by the infrared LED. When they sense power in the circuits they send internal signals to other components. If your TV does not come on at all then the issue is in one of the internal circuits, could be configuration issue, or that the power supply is at a low level. Please consider that the power supply in some equipment are voltage sensitive.

Video settings don't hold for more than 15min

Check capacitors. There are some very inexpensive meters for this and cheap capacitors are behind many problems in electronics. Once you find it is a bad cap you can replace it or the board.

I need codes for my emerson tv dvd vcr combo

The control codes for an Emerson combo unit are:

TV VCR/DVD
036 041
039 027
155 002
155 008
198 231

To program your remote by entering a code, follow these steps:

  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. Press and hold the CODE SEARCH button for at least 3 seconds until the red LED lights up and stays lit.
  3. Press the TV button on the remote so that the LED blinks once and then remains solid red.
  4. Enter the first set of 3-digit codes from the list. The LED will blink once every keypress. After the 3rd digit, the red LED will turn off indicating that the code was recognized for the device. If the code was not compatible, the LED will flash several times and you need to return to step 2 to try that code again or to try the next code in the list.
  5. After the LED has turned off, aim the remote at the TV and press ON/OFF. If the device turns off, you have used the correct code and the remote was successfully programed. If the device does not power off, return to step 2 and try again with the next code in the list.
Repeat the process substituting the VCR or DVD button for the TV button.

I hope that helps.
