Dead short? What type of meter are you using? Resistance between the line terminals when the motor is not running is often less than one ohm; I assume by 'active and neutral' you are refering to the two line connection terminals.

What is the problem or question you have? If you actually have 0 ohms line-to-line then the breaker will keep tripping and the motor needs to be replaced. If the motor buzzes and fails to start and then trips the breaker it MAY be worth fixing depending on where the trouble is:

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

Start with the capacitor. Use a digital multi-meter (DMM), preferably with a capacitor setting, or an analog meter set for Ohms. With an analog, you should see the needle deflect as if testing a closed circuit then it will slowly drop to 0 if the capacitor is good. If it doesn't move or moves and stays to the side showing a closed circuit the capacitor is bad. If you notice a burn hole near the terminals on the end of the capacitor do not bother to test it. If you do not have access to a meter you can try grounding the posts together with a screwdriver to see if they arc although It is not a very reliable test method. Be sure you are holding on to an insulated handle for the tool you use to short the terminals together or you can get a good poke.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details or contact me thru our site at www.arrowpools.net prior to rating the answer; I'll do what I can to help. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Hayward RS2000 suddenly stops. Motor housing is extremely hot and has a burnt smell. Thermal overload going bad?

it sounds like there may be a short in the pump. this will cause it to overheat and trip the thermal overload. it may be time for a new pump as this is usually cheaper than fixing it

Where does the neutral hook up go for the pump

Assuming you are connecting the pump for 115V the L1 and L2 terminals in the motor get the black (hot) and white(neutral) leads and the ground goes on the green screw. It does not matter which L post gets hot or neutral as long as one wire goes to each terminal.

What is broken in your motor? Don't count it out until you have your pool place give it a check. If it is dead, get a 1 1/2 Hayward Super Pump just like the one you have.

Hayward Swimming PoPump is 4 years old - when I opened pool, pump

it you've inspected all the wiring for possible shorts, the most likely problem is that the motor has developed a short in the windings. You may have to replace the motor. First check for loose connections and make sure the wiring going to the pump is good. Also, check the start capacitor, should be under the hump or under the end cover on the motor. If it's bloated or leaking, it's bad.
Most likely the winding have a direct short.

I am installing a Hayward Pool pump max flo II at 120 volt. I have 2 connections L1 and L2. Which one does the black hot wire go to.

Either one. Neutral to the other post. Be sure to set the voltage change device to 115V to match your incoming line voltage.

Does the live black wire need to be on the jumper side of the hayward super pump direct wiring ??

It does not matter which side it is on as long as hot is on one side and the neutral the other.
