My machine says it needs salt. My glasses have a white cloudy film. Is this related? Where do you put in the salt?. I see no container. How do I determine the hardness of my water?

You should be able to insert the salt into a container at the bottom of the machine. There should be a screw-top on it. Refer to the user manual on whether you need salt, and how to insert it. The manual/ documentation may have come with a single- use hardness indicator. Alternatively, you can purchase hardness indicator strips. If your electric kettle/ shower has large amounts of white calcium 'fur' in it, they this is a sure indication of hard water, and you should consider using salt

We have a new dishwasher, and we have a heavy white film on glassware and plastic glasses in the upper tray after use. What is the cause and what is the solution?

Its sounds as though your water harness is very high.
You have to add salt into the salt dispenser and set the machine for the "hardness" value in your area.
Your water company can tell you how hard the water is.
With the correct setting on the machine it will release salt to soften the water.
The salt you need is not cooking salt but one for a dishwasher available from supermarket.

We have hard water at our home, but the new dishwasher leaves a thick film on the glasses. We use the rinse agent, but it's awful.

You have to buy a cartridge type water softener and attach it to the
inlet water line of your dish washer. In addition to this there must be
a salt compartment in the dish washer.
Refer the user guide /owners manual and locate. Fill it with the special
dish washer salt. ( Do not use kitchen salt used for food).
The dish washer salt may help to certain extent in softening the wash
tub water inside. Check the switch settings for rinse aid and salt
release settings in the machine. Refer manual!

White film on glasses. Cannot find solution,

Check water quality. clean the drain filter in the machine. Check spray arm spray jet holes. Clean if clogged.

If you suspect salt chamber try removing all the salt by flushing with water externally. Refill with fresh salt.

My whirlpool dishwasher is leaving a white hard film on glasses. what do I need to do to stop it

Try a rinse agent. You will have a reservoir in the door of your machine. Fill and see it that helps.
In some areas you have "hard water" which contains a lot of minerals. These can leave deposits on dishes that tend to bake on to surfaces as the dishes dry. In this case you add salt to your unit (again there is a reservoir to hold the salt).
In some cases a given detergent will react with glass, plastic, or ceramic depending again on mineral content and hard water. Changing your detergent can help.
Hope this helps, please rate if it helps get you with direction.

Glass and cups coming out with a milky stain on them, no shine at all.

Rub a little vinegar on the surface of an affected item. Does the stain vanish? If so then you have limescale deposits caused by no salt in the machine.

No salt can be an empty dispenser, a faulty dispenser, or using dishwasher tablets/powder without additional supplementary salt in a hard water area. it can also be caused by having the salt dispensing control set too low (on many models it's a lever located adjacent to the dispenser lid).

Try cleaning the machine by adding white vinegar to the wash water (before the water-fill procedure finishes). Put your stained dishes and cutlery in with the wash to remove the hard water deposits. The combination of salt and rinse aid may have helped cause this problem. Hope this helps!

After completion of the washing there is grit/sand on the glasses which is hard to remove. What would cause this?

the only cause of this problem is that you have not used salt in the machine, salt is vital for the machine to run efficiently, it will take about 2 wash cycles for the salt to take effect once you have filled it with the salt

Salt in the dishwasher or the water softener?

Did you check with the dishwasher manufacturer? Do you have an instruction book?

If a water softener, you use rock or sea salt available at your local Ace Hardware or other fine retailer in your area. If your dishwasher is making soft water for your machine, probably the same ... rock or sea salt.

Too much salt

Don't know about this model, but if the salt pickup is inline with the water the water may not be flowing in fast enough and the reduced pressure may be letting the salt in. Anyway, final rinse should remove the salt. Try putting two clean glasses (no salt taste) in the unit, one upright and the other down. Run the unit with no soap and stop it after each cycle and check the glasses for salt. If you still have it after each cycle, try filling the unit from the sink manually before the final rinse. If salt's still present, something's leaking
