Question about Lexmark X4550 InkJet Printer
I have the same problem. I used the "Lexmark Imaging Studio" application and clicked on the "Display or Change Network settings" link at the left bottom corner (The words might be different, my installation is in German, so I translate it as I assume it would be in English). I then added my Computer again with a new name to the printer and it worked. Now I actually want to find out how to delete the old entry on the printer, but that is later's problem.
My guess now is that mybe it is because I have a router and use DHCP ip addresses. I am going to give my computer a fixed IP and see if it then always works. Maybe the printer is not able to really resolve the IP address and saves it. Only guessing!

I have the same issue with my x4550 & spent 5-6 hours on the phone with Lexmark support yesterday and the above was one of the steps they had me do, my printer has it's own ip address set.
I spent a good 5-6 hours the day before troubleshooting this issue with 2 vista machines, on my own. I have 2 vista desktops connecting to my x4550 via wireless. I did manage to get one of them to scan using the scan to pc from the printer. However I am pretty certain now that the one I still have issues with is something to do with my registry and an older scanner that was uninstalled, or older software conflict. but here are a couple of suggestions you can try:
1 - changing the computer name as stated by Frank (Peterfm)
2 - Check to see if you antivirus programs or firewalls or windows defender may be blocking the printer. Try turning all of these off, powercycle your pc & printer, then try scanning. if successful you will have to add these files to your antivirus program etc... to give permissions:
App4R.exe
lxdiamon.exe
lxdimon.exe

3 - The following is from the lexmark website, but since I found it hard to
find what I was looking for when I was troubleshooting I copied it to
word and saved for my own reference back to. This procedure correct the scan issue on my now working PC. Still working on the other PC.

It is not possible to retrieve the scan application list during
the Downloading Application List step. To determine
if the resolution below should be used, the following should also be
applicable:
either with a network or USB connection.
using Windows Photo Gallery (in Windows XP using the Scanner and
Camera wizard). NOTE:
This can only be tried with a USB connection.
Studio software, you should be able to scan with a USB
connection but the Scan to PC option from the operator panel
should fail when connected via USB.
