Question about Denon Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

Just bought used Denon 700 adv, can't get the sound right. voices are not crips and hard to understand. Tried all different surround modes and adjusted each speaker for Treble and Bass. Changed to two really good big stereo speakers and still have fuzzy voices. Don't know if this a adjustment problem or bad amp.??

My input source is Vizio Digital TV optical output. I forgot to say that when I use the headset the voices are crystal clear, but when I go through the speakers it gets fuzzy. some TV channels are worse than others but none are "right". I paid $125.00 for this setup with 4 speakers and 1 subwoofer. Is it worth my trouble to attempt to have it fixed or should I just take my loss and forget it.

You didn't mention what the source of your material is that you are inputting to the Denon and that may make a difference. If you have AM/FM selected, the problem could be in the receiver. If the source doesn't matter and you have distortion from any source, then the problem is in either the output amplifiers (which may be larger modules) or in the power supply. Not being able to hear it, it's tough to exactly diagnose but your description sounds like 'clipping distortion' and this can happen because of too low of voltage from the power supply. This can again, come from a failed voltage regulator IC or from capacitors that have decayed and are not filtering as they should. Any good tech should be able to pinpoint it better after hearing the distorted output.
While researching that model, I saw dates ranging back to 2003 and if it has been used a lot, this is long enough to have failed capacitors since they mostly come from China and there were millions of them made with poor electrolyte quality causing relatively early failure. I have US made electrolytic capacitors that are well over 30 years old that test close to their new values. Those from China have a lousy track record.

    > when I use the headset the voices are crystal clear

The signal for the phones output doesn't pass through the final amplifiers but is 'picked off' between a preamp and the final amp. It is very possible that these stages are not using the same supply voltage since their demands are very different; most of the circuitry consumes little current compared to the finals and is often not even the same voltage at all. If both (or all) channels are producing distortion at the speakers, I believe the power supply section servicing the output stages is at fault. I don't know what labor costs in your area but the components most likely to be at fault are not expensive.

Hi pressed a button on my Denon remote and have now lost sound out of 2 of my 5 speakers. Don't know what I pressed can you please help. Thank you

I would guess it's the Surround Sound mode button. Various modes in Surround Sound do not use all 5 speakers. Often the button pressed repeatedly changes between the modes. So if you press it again it might restore the sound mode to the one you had. I can't be more specific as you did not give the model number.
You could try the Denon website to see if they have a free PDF of the user manual, if you have lost it. You will need the model number for that though.

Connecting Kindle Fire to Denon receiver

Assuming that you've tried a different HDMI cable, tried a different input plug and you weren't watching a 1920's silent film..its possible that the front middle speaker is the issue? try and see if there is sound coming from that speaker, its usually where the voices from movies comes from.

Can't get clear sound when not in "bypass" mode on Denon Pro Logi

From the FM radio mode, from your remote press the speaker button to make sure just the front speakers are on, make sure surround is off and use the tone cotrol button on the right side of the amp to adjust the bass and treble. That should clear things up a bit

Only sound from Direct and Stereo settings on Denon AVR 788

Other listening modes (dolby, dts, neo6) are decoded from digital signals.

Direct will relay your only your discrete analog inputs - so if you want to use your AVR as an amplifier for those channels, you'll need to supply an input signal in a different manner.
