Question about Pantech Matrix Cell Phone
I think your phone's keyboard/keypad is defective, that's it's not responding. Also, it is possible that the flex of the keyboard/keypad may have loosed contact.
So, now you will have to disassemble the phone to actually find out if the keypad is intact and has no damage flex.
Turn of the phone, remove the battery, get a torx screw driver, remove all the screwing holding the phone together, use a flat torx screw driver to pry the phone case from the side to get it apart and check the keypad. Make sure it is intact and try again. You don't need to couple the phone back before test it. You can put the battery and test it before put the phone together.
If you feel you cannot perform this task on your own, you can call a family or friend that you feel can assist you. (two heads are better than one).....
If you don't find any obvious problem with the keyboard/keypad or it's flex, then you will have to replace the keypad.
I hope you understand the above.

Generally, when a cell phone's keypad is not
working properly it could be one of three different reasons:
1- Due to shock from a drop, circuitry is damaged thus no matter how hard you press you will never get the phone to register it. This issue is one that a certified technician would have to take care of and is nothing that we can fix here as it would be time consuming and expensive.
2- Because of moisture or heat, again, the circuitry could be damaged. Nothing to be done here really. The only thing to try best for a phone that's been subjected to moisture is to place it in a sealed container with rice. The rice will draw out the moisture and if there was not too much damage the phone should work fine
3- The phone's keypad membrane is broken or dented.
