You have to get the correct receiver for that fan. There's no such thing as a universal remote,no matter what it says on the box. Call 1-888-830-1326 and you can order your correct part.

If there is no remote control for this fan, at first thought I would think that one of the connections in the ceiling box that the fan is attached to has a problem. In my experience, the ceiling fan wire is smaller than the wires in the ceiling box. This can make it difficult for the screw type of wire connector to grip the wires in the connection and make a solid connection. I would, turn the power off to that box (circuit breaker) and take the cover plate off the box. Then take the wires individually that come from the fan and pull them 1 by 1 and see if one of these wires comes easily out of the connector. Gently pull these wires. If one or more come out, then re make the connection (you can strip the insulation for a full 1 inch, of the fan wire, double the wire over on itself so that you have 1/2 inch of wire. Try to wrap this around the ceiling box wire that it is to be connected to and install the twist plastic wire connector and twist till snug. Do not over tighten or you will have to get a new connector and remake the connection. The reason the fan may turn on and off is because of a loose connection that looks good, but electrically is not good. The wires connect, heat up a little, break connection, cool down, make connection, heat up a little . . . and you get the picture. Hope this helps.

Bought a display hunter 20171 Ergonomics C Fan. The wires were cut short, remote control receiver not included.

have no choice but to buy the original receiver through hunter - not a replacement from HD or Lowes - it will not work.

The canopy doesn't seeem to fit flush up against

You just need to wrap it and tuck it .. You might need to cut some of the fan wires shorter so there is not so much bulk under the canopy cover. The fans are shipped with enough wire leads to be able to use a down rod, They can be cut shorter when the fan is being installed.

Most likely the remote problem is some kind of radio frequency interference. If the main problem is that they turn on when you don't want them on, then you could rewire or just put an extra switch that would turn off the power to the fan completetely. Then you would turn that switch on and use the remote only when you wanted it to run. This would be an extra step, but it would save you buying another fan.

You also might contact Hunter and see if they could send you a regular switch.
