My laptop cannot detect my hard drive. It no longer vibrates and the light doesn't blink anymore.

the drive could be potentially corrupt.
plug in your HDD and run recurrva and try to recover files if you cant do that remove the HDD from the caddy and plug into a PC and test if you can access your files if not reformat by right clicking on the drive in my computer (ntfs is recommended) you will loose all data but you may be able to recover your HDD

When I plug my my Hitachi SDM/205 250GB Simple Drive into the usb port a pop-up window appears and says that it needs to be reformatted. Have I lost my data?

Yes, but there are many recovery software that you can download from the internet.... so don't worry, try by searching Recover My Files which is very effective. Please note to format your HDD using Quick Format rather than Full Format.. Good luck..

Hi. Recently my computer stopped reading my external HDD. I had no problems at all, and one day it just would not show up at all, either under my computer, nor the device manage. it showed under disk...

This describes what is generally a logical failure.

This usually occurs if the drive is disconnected or powered off without being properly ejected.

If the size of the drive is reported correctly but the format is unknown this is usually easy to recover data from as long as you hadn't encrypted the data.

If this is the case check out the review I just read on PCTools file recovery and try the trial version to ensure your files are recoverable. Then if they are, buy it for $40 and recover the files to a different drive.

Once you've recovered them you can delete the unreadable partition from disk manager and reformat the drive for continued use.

If the drive was corrupted while encrypted you will need a pro to assist in any recovery attempts, in this case reply with your location(Country, State, City) and I'll be happy to direct you to a pro in your area.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Blinking light, clicking sound?

Hard disks clicking is not a good thing. Did you drop it?

Open the case and check connections.

If you can, install it as a slave drive on another machine and attempt to recover data from there.

Afterwards check the drive for errors, reformat and delete partitions. If it is damaged then parts of it could be used as storage, but I'd advise against using it as a bootable disk and as a storage location for precious data.

Failing this, there are specialists who can recover data from corrupted drives. You'd have to speak to them about it.

Hope this helps

I/O Error on Acomdata External Hard Drive

Hi there,

Go into Control Panel/System/Device Manager and look for yellow exclamation marks. Delete any you find. Reboot your computer. Connect the external hard drive and turn it on. Let Windows discover it. If it asks for the driver, put in the CD that came with the drive.
If this will not works means there is some problem in your HDD partition and you need to format them...

if you donot want to lose any data then use any recovery software to recover data from your HDD.

Good Luck!!

No recognized by any PC I try to plug in

I was just having the same problem... but someone I connected it to my computer, forgot it was connected, and when i got back everything was back again (needless to say i got another 500GB HD from another company and back up the first 500gb).

But if that didn't work, i was going to take the drive out and connect it as a slave to my computers MB, back it up, reformat it, and then put it back in the enclosure to see if it works again (at least i have my data).

$500 bucks?!?!? Shoot, send it to me and i'll do it for $299 (that includes a Western Digital 500gb External =)

Hopes this helps.

Recovering files from a bad drive using external hdd enclosureh

Hi, I usually use GetDataBack (2 versions FAT and NTFS). I have used this program to recover files from HDs similarly connected (external case > USB). The freeware versions will allow you only a limited number of files at a time, the paid version will allow you to recover all (including purposely deleted files). There are similar programs/freeware but my experience with GetDataBack has been super so far that I really have no reason to look for another one. Pls refer to the 2nd image on this link where GTB was recovering files from an HD that is not even recognized by Windows XP in "My Computer". Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
