Wireless internet connectivity problem

Asus ee 900 laptop - XP

Im troubleshooting for a non-technical colleague. No problems connecting to wired networks, however it shows "connected" to wireless networks (has connected to several open networks) yet the browser cant display anything, the usual cannot connect error. Wireless is turned on, the unsecured wireless network itself is open and working for other users near me.

From browsing online forums, wireless connectivity seems to be a common problem with the ee pc, can anyone offer guidance on what to try next? Taking it back to the store will be a waste of everyone's time!

Thanks in advance, Niall, Dublin, Ireland.

On an unsecured access point (not WEP or WPA) it should work.

If you are connecting via wireless, the reason is usually because your router has lost its internet connection. Try switching the wireless router off, waiting 10 seconds and switching it on again. Can you explain how you are trying to connect and if you can use any other computer successfully, etc.

what version of linux are you using? If it's one that came preinstalled with the laptop I suggest looking at Ubuntu netbook edition, *very* capable OS, if that can't handle it nothing will.

Internet Connection Problem on One Computer

By any chance, are you trying to use something other than Windows to manage the wireless adapter? If you are, remove it.

Now, Click on Start, right click on Network highlight properties, and click on manage network connections on the Tasks menu.
Your two options will be the icons for your LAN and Wireless Network. Is it enabled and without red or yellow marks? It could be disable, it could be not connected and you can't view wireless networks because the switch is off, or it may just nut see your unsecure network (unlikely).

If the above is clear, right click on the wireless and highlight Properties and left click so it brings up the Networking tab. Highlight IPv4 and click on Properties. Make sure the Obtain dots are ticked. That should work, since you are running unsecured.
If it already is, check the red X or if it isn't click OK and close down the box.

Now, back to where your Wireless card is showing, right click it and you have Disable, Connect/Disconnect, Status, Diagnose etc.

If you're still Disconnected but not Disabled, click on Connect/Disconnect. Does it show your wireless network?

By this time, it should. If it doesn't post back. The other possibility is that you take your computer to a wireless internet cafe, McDonalds, Panera Bread, or motel with WiFi and test it there.

I am not able to connect this with internet.

If you would like to use wireless inernet, you have to have an access point nearby and that you know the authentication like the WEP or the WPA key, and you can get that from the network admin. click start > connect to > wireless network connection , then click on View wireless networks. click on the network you want to connect to, then click on connect. You should be able to connect after entering the passkey, or it automatically connects if the access point is unsecured.
