Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

This question concerns an off lease dell 600 laptop running Windows 98. It came with all the original equpiment down to original purchase receipt and all discs including OS and driver disk. It also has a docking station (Latitude C/ll port) on which the LAN connection does not work. Not a big problem since the LAN connection on the side of the laptop works fine but if it's on the discs I would like to fix it. I just don't know what the driver would be called and fall asleep searching the list. Any help that's not just a link to more endless reading would be appreciated. Thank you!

Lots of helpful links which are very useful when you attempt to revive as much barely functioning old equipment as I do. Thank you!

Hi

As you understand that dell does not support Windows 98 as its end of life from Microsoft. Since you have the original discs then it makes things good. You need to install the LAN drivers under network category.

I have a brand new (bought yesterday) HP Pavilion g6 laptop. Today it is reporting a hard disk problem. However, everything seems to work. Am I headed for trouble?

I don't recomend purchasing an HP to anyone because this is all too common. My father in law purchased a 17" HP Pavilion and opened it for the first time from the corner instead of the middle and the LCD cracked and broke. He didn't purchase a warantee with it and the cost of the LCD and Labor would have been half of what he originally bought it for.

Did you purchase a warantee with it? According to HP's website they have a limited warantee. This is an excerpt:

HP guarantees that the HP Hardware Products that you have purchased or leased from HP are free from defects in materials or workmanship under normal use during the Limited Warranty Period. The Limited Warranty Period starts on the date of purchase or lease from HP. Your dated sales or delivery receipt, showing the date of purchase or lease of the product, is your proof of the purchase or lease date. You may be required to provide proof of purchase or lease as a condition of receiving warranty service. You are entitled to hardware warranty service according to the terms and conditions of this document if a repair to your HP Hardware Product is required within the Limited Warranty Period.

During the Limited Warranty Period, HP will, at its discretion, repair or replace any defective component. All component parts or hardware products removed under this Limited Warranty become the property of HP. In the unlikely event that your HP Hardware Product has recurring failures, HP, at its sole discretion, may elect to provide you with (a) a replacement unit of HP's choosing that is the same or equivalent to your HP Hardware Product in performance or (b) to give you a refund of your purchase price or lease payments (less interest) instead of a replacement. This is your exclusive remedy for defective products.

It is mandatory that the unit product number and serial number be made available when requesting a warranty service event. Failure to do so may result in the event being deemed out of warranty by HP or, HP's Authorised Service Providers, and therefore chargeable to the requester.

I would return it and get a different one anyway. You should be able to use the reciept as the proof of purchase.

A hard disk problem can happen with any new computer from any company, sometimes they slip through the cracks.

As a recomendation I would add that you'll get a better bang for your buck if you were to purchase a Dell (warantee is better and more inclusive) or even a Macintosh. For my father in law, he bought a Macbook (laptop) and installed bootcamp which allowed him to install the Windows 7 operating system and now he only runs Windows 7. It works really well for him.

I hope this helps!

Need drivers to run windows 98se on dell xps m140

Microsoft (and Dell) stopped supporting Windows 98 a few years ago -- it lasted for over TEN years! So, it is *NOT* likely that you will find drivers for any computer that was "designed for Windows 2000" or "designed for Windows XP" or "designed for Vista".

So, in general, it is a _bad_ idea to connect any computer running Windows 98 to the Internet -- Microsoft has issued many "security-fixes" in the 4 years after they stopped supporting Windows 98 and Windows ME.

How do i delete windows 98 from my laptop it originally had vista and my kid put 98 on it and now it wont boot

you need to run your vista cd back on the laptop & reinstall vista, Vista will make the changes for you. you cant removed 98 and have vista back and running as it was before as windows 98 would have changed the hard drive format from ntsf to fat32

Viking Rose 605 does not read anything but Win 98.

Ebay may have a laptop with win 98 but that is a pretty old OS. No way to register the software without contacting Viking to ask them to allow you to register her old software unless she sent you the reg numbers. She can't transfer ownership to you without those numbers on a certificate. Only originators of the software can allow you to do that by overriding her registration. Contact VSM and ask them if they will do this so you can use it.

Altos server 600

The Acer Altos 600 does not offer any driver support for server 2003. I would suspect the error you a re running into will turn out to be a driver issue. If it were me, I would retire that old 600 and build yourself a desktop server if money is a concern.  If money is not a concern, buy a nice Dell or HP server and be done with it.
Besides, the Altos is a Pentium 3 with 1.5 gig of RAM MAX. Is it not enough machine to run Server 03 properly.

Windows 98

Software licenses much be purchased. You will find the activation code on the original cd media or a sticker on your computer. If you have Windows up and running and just want the key in case it crashes, go into your registry and search for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion", the key will be in the format "ProductKey"="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX"

Actually I Believe It's A Vista Problem

My advice is what they don't know won't hurt them. Ssshhh! Don't tell anybody. What I would do is convert the machine to XP, then before your lease is up revert the machine back to Vista. This will involve purchasing a Vista disc if the machine was preloaded and didn't come with one. Dell is accustom to people wiping the hard drive and reloading the operating system before returning a leased machine. I do data recovery and hard drive wipes for several local companies that lease from Dell, because they are a bit paranoid (in my opinion) of any body (Dell) recovering their data. I even have nondisclosure forms for each of them. Your other option is purchasing a new hard drive, and setting it up with XP to run in your machine. This way you can just pull your drive with your info and data, slap in the original drive and hand it back when the lease is due, and they'll never know. The new hard drive is probably the better way to go of the two. Hope this helps and if you have any qther questions feel free to ask.
