Question about Multitech Systems Multi-Tech MultiMobile USB Modem

3 Answers

I am Abraham Cheng from Taiwan. I'd like to seek your professsional avice for the problem I encounter with: Product Model: Multitech Systems MT9234ZBA-USB multimodem OS: Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 Fax Server I'm using: Hylafax Problem Descriptions: -------------------------------- The modem will fail in fax-receiving usually after 2-4 successful fax-receivings. When the modem fails in fax-receiving, I use my desktop phone set to dial the fax-number, MOST OF THE TIME, the modem responds with rings and rings -- without the familiar modem beeping ..., OCCASSIONALLY, the modem responds with busy tone even though I now that no one is using the line. My own findings for your information: -------------------------------------------------- At the moment of fax-receiving failure, I once tried to run Hylafax's faxaddmodem -- hoping to reconfigure the modem, faxaddmodem refused to initialize and reported: "Sorry, the device is currently in use by another program". Please advise how much I should pay for your professional solution for this problem and how I can pay (I have PayPal account, too). It's 23:40 here in Taiwan, so I'll not reply to you until tomorrow morning here. Thank you in advance and have a nice day. With best regards, Abraham Cheng

    Many thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, it does not solve my problem.

As suggested I re-checked the physical line connections and the line
    connections are OK.

In fact, I had disabled the data and voice functions
(via faxaddmodem of hylafax), so the modem in theory
    works in fax-mode only.

In addition, I'm sure that during my tests no other lines
will interfer with the modem line.

The suggested link is MultiTech's user manual. Yes, before I submitted
my request I had tried to find solutions from it and failed.

    Any more comments are appreciated.

    With best regards.

    HI alokerdas:

I'm Abraham Cheng. Thank you for your reply to my problem on Multitech modem. I have followed your guide and reach multitech's support. Amazingly they reply in less than one hour with to-the-point techanical guide.

Therefore, I think you have solved my problem. Becasue I'm new to FixYa, I do not how to mark your solution as the real solution , because yesterday I have posted my problem again.

I'll reply to you tomorrow here, becuase it is 1:00 in the morning here.

    With best regards.

    Hi,

Thank you for the proposed solutions. Because I have used one of the links that the first solution provided,

and think the first solution ought to be the most effective one.

Because I'm new to FixYa, I do not know how to acknowlege that the first solution is a good one. One effort

I made is to leave a comment to the first solution provider (2 days ago or so). So far I have not got

reply from the first solution provider. That's why I have not made any commnets on your solution. Sorry.

If you know how I can finalize this case (by acknowleging the first solution is the good one), please kindly instruct me.

    With best regards.

    Hi fredy2:

Many thanks for your comments. Yes, my problem still remains. Your observation is quite logic and reasonable. I'll study and verify it further. Also, as a verifying test, I'll try migrating my applications to Fedora. I'll definitely let you know my test results ( I'm going to southern Taiwan during this Wednesday through Friday. So, my reply on this subject may be early next week)

Are you "alokerdas" who provides me the first solution? ( I saw that name on the title of the first solution). Actually on the web page presented to me, there is a "Accept This Solution" button with every new solution.

Your latest comment (categoried as solution 3 on the web page presented to me) there is also the "Accept This Solution" button. But the first solution at this moment does not have the same button. I guess it is because I did not click that button at the first moment and asked for more solution providers.

If fredy2 and alokerdas are the same man, I'd like to click that "Accept This Solution" button.

    May I ?

    Have a good day.

    With best regards,

    Abraham Cheng

    Hi fredy 2:

    This is Abraham Cheng.
I'm glad to tell you that my problem has been solved, and I'd like to share the findings with you.

After a few days' fruitless efforts on my own, I contacted Multitech support again. They instructed me to configure hylafax to use hardwae flow control and ModemRate to 38400. After I had followed their instruction my problme was solved. Now my system can receive fax-ins perfectly.

I thank you again for your previous comments. Have a nice week.

    With best regards,
    Abraham Cheng

No need to pay for my observation... From what you describe I would lay the blame on the software and it MAY be an incompatibility with Ubuntu. It sounds like the software is not cleaning itself after operation. We call some of these failures "memory leaks" which is when a program fails to return the memory that was allocated to the available memory pool. Essentially one can run out of available memory space. The faxes you received where do they go... IF they stay in memory they will quickly use up RAM and the system will be busy. In short, I can't give you a solution but can only point out what might be happening to cause the problem. When the failure occurs, try to use the available tools to check memory availabilty and if the previous program has exited fully. I would be tempted to put the problem on a forum for Ubuntu users.

No need to acknowledge. I actually prefer to offer free solutions. I have been away for three days doing sound for an event in another city. I am not sure how to close a case but there should be a close function that will prevent others from sending more solutions...I don't know where it is on fixya... Their software needs to be more user friendly *** we get a lot of people posting things in frustration because the fixya thing puts them in wrong categories and model numbers. Maybe there is a closure place for comments on this posting.

Most of these problems are with the software and the setups within it. It is seldom the problem is defective hardware, although it happens. Alokoderas is another person. Thank you for letting me know you got the problem solved. Flow control setting puts the unit in a "handshake mode" to prevent overruns of data. It prevents the hardware from sending or receiving when it is too busy to handle the flow. If an overrun occurs, the system will lose data and get out of sync and not be ready to accept the next function.

1. I see that you are using Ubuntu 10.4.
2. I suggest that you upgrade the OS (operating system) to Ubuntu 10.10 the new distro
3.This should find the model of the fax modem you are using.
4. If you are good at reworking the kernel of the Linux Distro you are using.> you will have to know the details of the fax modem you are using and build the kernel with the drivers available for this fax modem.
5. Driver are usually the issue for Ubuntu> some drivers are not available for some internal/external devices. Since most devices are designed for Windows. If you can incorporate the Windows drivers into the "kernel build" this will allow your "fax modem" work properly in the Ubuntu environment.

The main problem is, there is a collision between your two decides and cause them malfunctioning. The cause could be anything like, if you have call waiting on the same phone line as your modem, it can interrupt your connection. You should disable it, if not necessary, check for any loose connections. You can not use your modem to send/receive data or fax at a time, your os may have the option, but they can not use the same modem at the same time. Check these things and for more information check this web link :

If the problem still exists, then you have to contact customer support here http://www.multitech.com/en_US/SUPPORT/

Unable to browse the internet via the RF820 although there is no block of port 80

Am experiencing the same problem. Try manually entering a working DNS number in your COMPUTER under the network settings. Then open your browser and go to a site you know is up and running; i.e. www.microsoft.com. If the site opens, then the problem is exactly like mine. It appears that the Multitech RF is having problems transmitting the DNS numbers through the network to the individual computers. I haven't found a fix yet other than putting the DNS IP numbers into EACH individual computer. Some devices will not allow manual DNS inputs; thus lies the bigger problem (I have some that do not allow it; i.e. Wii, Phillips TV, and Dish Network Satellite receivers). Hope this helps some. It is looking like an impossibility to purchase a new Multitech RF SOHO as there appear to be NONE for sale on the internet.
