The iPod detects both protected and unprotected networks, and can remember which Wi-Fi networks you have used before, eliminating the need to enter passwords more than once. Your iPod touch should automatically detect wireless networks, but you can also manually connect to a network or switch to a new one.

Have you tried reset? May have volume button stuck. To reset hold home button down until you see slide to power off when it powers back on apple insignia will pop up
1.Go to "Settings" from the iPhone home screen. 2. Select "General." 3. Go to "Reset" at the bottom of the page. 4. Click "Reset Home Screen Layout." 5. Click "Reset Home Screen." The icons on the home screen are now back to the default icons, including the App Store icon.
If you haven't done anything stupid before that screen appeared, try turning it off first by holding the power and the home button at the same time for around 10 sec. (or until the image from your iPod screen disappears). After that, turn it back on by holding the power button for around 3 sec. Let it load first before you do anything. If the same screen appear again, then, that's the time you restore.
Messages are previewed on the screen when they arrived, then once you click the home screen they will disappear and then you can only read them in messages
