Question about Maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive 300GB 7,200 RPM - FireWire & USB (E04W300)

Computer does not recognize Maxtor OneTouch

My computer does not recognize my Maxtor OneTouch. This just happened about a week ago. Until then I was able to back up my programs....I do need help immediately as I am trying to back up my data on Quicken....
Also, it says that it is locked, how do I unlock it???????

Carol Woods My Maxtor One Touch 2 USB & IEEE 300 GB drive is not recognized with an unit letter and is marked with a yellow question mark in device manager. Seagate support has a database filled with similar problems but no complete solution. The Windows XP pro SP3 machine does opem the new hardware install guide every time the external drive is powered but fails to install the XP drivers for USB. Problems started when shutting down the USB connection and truying the Firewitre connection one at the time. The drive is not recognized as a Firewire unit at all !
The suggestion to try the drive on another PC did not work as I used a VISTA home PC Pavillon d9350ea and the VISTA problems are also well described from SEAGATE with no support for VISTA for the Maxtor One Touch 2 300 GB drive.
I would very much like a full solution to save data from drive !
HELP us !

    worldvet: more help needed
    The suggested steps were done. Still the drive is not assigned a unite letter. Still the drive is marked as unknown device. The MAxtor One Touch 2 software was removed, system restarted, the found new hardware dialog entered and directed to the Maxtor drivers CD.
    Results were the device could not be installed.

    A new test was done with the 1394-cablage but drive was not found as IEEE unit.

    Please guide me how to install standard XP USP drivers without using MAxtor software.

    The 300 GB drive have worked both as USB and IEEE from 2005 - 2008.

    How can I dedicate a unit letter to the unknown device ?

    The suggested fixes with reinstalling software and cables failed. I choosed the hard ware way and

    installed it in a new external power-supplied-cabinet (chassi) by Deltaco. It was easy to remove and install the drive in the cabinet. All data is recovered and the drive is recognized as an USB external drive. End of story.

You can try to create a short cut for this concern and lets see if you will be able to check that drive, Just right click anywhere on your desktop screen and select New>Shortcut then if if you already has a existing drive C, D and E try to put there F: then check if you will be able to access that external drive using that shortcut..

Unkown device, in usb devices which should install automatically generally tell of a faulty device.

    if you get the same issue in another (try Xp this time, not vista) computer, that tells me that there is a hardware problem in the controller between usb and the harddrive inside the case.



    your data is most likely all still safe in the harddrive.

Hi,

Sounds like you need to remove the cable, uninstall the software, Restart, and then shut down. Now, from a cold power off power on. I know this seems tedious, but it has to do with the Last Known Good Recovery File and what is in Device Manger.

Now reinstall the software and if the software should call for you to "now" connect the USB cable, do so only when prompted or when the installer is done. Re: the latter, attach the cable. Windows ill say it discovered new hardware, point windows to your CD drive where the installer disk is located and allow Windows to locate the software.

Shut down and restart and your drive should be recognized now when you have a desktop. If not, post this back using the comment box below.

Try unplugging both the power and data cables from both the computer and the hard drive. Let the hard drive spin down. Plug the cables back in. It should become visible with no loss of files.

I've had this problem before (something similar) you'll need additional software from Maxtor.com so you're PC will recognize the new drive.

Please Make sure you External Hard disk USB cable is working correctly. Your cable is probably having partial contact, so try another cable

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

I have the same problem, but havent found ay way around it.......i am also getteing pritty desperate here................the old one had this problem...cant fint it in device mannager, dos or anywhere else....no matter which computer i try, xp, vista no deifference...

Old Maxtor/New Maxtor


If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer.

And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore


Hi,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

The problem is just with EXTERNAL.
Hdd is fine...Just change the external or buy new
