Question about Seagate FreeAgent (ST305004FDA1E1-RK) 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

When I plug my Seagate GoFlex 500 GB external hard drive into the USB port, it does not Autorun and the drive letter does not appear in Explorer although it recognizes the device as an external USB device. It is mapped to location (0), and this is how it looks when I right-click it in Disk Management.: http://i.imgur.com/wXhCy.png (The same thing happens in my both PCs, so I know it's the external hard drive.) Troubleshooting doesn't work. I tried reinstalling the driver; I restart my computer, and everything's the same. I also turned this drive (0) into a Dynamic Disk, because it was my only option when I right-clicked, and I wanted to see if it would help, but no. Please help?

I already said: (The same thing happens in my both PCs, so I know it's the external hard drive.)
And yes, when the hard drive is plugged the light blinks. Also, when I click on Safely Remove Hardware, I can see the external hard drive there.

Also, this is how I know it is mapped as "0":http://i.imgur.com/5Winr.png

I'm curious: Did you even read my description of the problem, or are you just giving automated replies? If you'd checked the screenshot I gave link to in the post, you would see that I can't change the drive letter for my external device: It does not appear among other drivers.

    1. Yes, the light blinks.

    2. I already said: (The same thing happens in my both PCs, so I know it's the external hard drive.)

    3. As you can see in the screenshot above, I can't see the driver in Disk Management, so I can't change the letter.

jackpot00 didn't even read the description of my problem, and has been offering solutions like a bot.

My problem isn't solved, but I've learned I have no other option than just getting a new external hard drive. Thanks.

Hello
Your hard drive is defective. This is very common on external USB hard drives. Your options here are to have a data recovery service retrieve the stored information off the disk of the drive or just replace it if the information is not vital and the drive is not the only place you had it stored. Data recovery services are on the Internet, just Goggle it, it is however fairly expensive. These drives are not repairable due to the extremely precise way they are manufactured..

Try the seagate troubleshooter -->click here

OR try to change the drive letter for your external device -->here

Is the hard drive listed on Device Manager ->go into the My Computer (right click)> System Properties> Hardware (tab)> Device Manager, and see of you are showing any yellow question marks. These yellow marks are for unknown attached devices Windows does not know what it is, and can not install because it has no driver in it's data base to recognize it.

The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.

This is a good read on what this error actually means:

What I recommend is reformatting the drive under Computer Management, and seeing if that fixes the problem.

Assuming you are using a Windows operating system, you can just plug it into your computer's USB ports, and the computer will recognise it as another hard drive.

Instructions:
Double-click on 'My Computer' and take note of what drive letters are there (C:, D:, etc.) before you plug in the Seagate Freeagent.
Plug in the Seagate Freeagent. You'll see the new drive, likely E: or F: (depending on what is already there before you plugged in the Seagate Freeagent)
Double-click on the new drive, and it'll open up and you'll see the files stored on that drive. You can drag and drop files and save to this drive like any other folder on your computer.

How do i find the files that have been saved on my seagate freeagant goflex desk 2TB drive

Hi there babyface,

You just have to plugin your Seagate FreeAgent to your computer's usb port using the usb cable. Once plugged in power the seagate on and your computer should pop up a notification, usually in the lower right corner of your computer screen, saying that it has detected a new USB device. Next, right click your Windows Start button and choose Explore to Open Windows Explorer. Once the window opens, look for the drive letter associated with your Seagate FreeAgent under "My Computer" or "Computer" located on the left pane. Click for that drive to show the contents on the right side of the window. Thats it!

If you need further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have window server 2003 OS and 500 GB free agent desktop USB hard disk is not showing in my computer. So how can i rectify it?

I just finished a Chat exchange with Seagate Tech support. MS Server OS's are not supported for FreeAgent devices.

It appears that whatever drivers exist in the XP install that recognize the USB device connection are not the same in the MS Server environment.

I plan to check the USB device drivers from both systems and see if the XP USB device drivers will work on Server 2003.

For a MAC to use an external Hard drive, the hard drive has to be formatted FAT32 file system. That is the only file system MAC sees.
