Question about Sceptre DCL20A 20 in. LCD TV
This is becoming a major problem nowadays with flat screen tv's.
A few years ago, there was some companies that made the capacitors.
Well, they did so without having any quality control standards, and the made about 10 million capacitors that were defective.
They chose profit over quality and put all the junk parts onto the market anyways.
The capacitors are starting to fail at an alarming rate.
A good quality capacitor should last between 25-30 years, but these junk ones are failing really quickly.
Some are going out in as little as 6 months.
Unfortunately, they aren't really a part that the normal consumer can replace on their own.
The reason isn't because they are soldered in..alot of people can fix that on their own.
It's because the capacitors act like a booster battery, and energizes the screen, convergence filter, and raster grid all at once.
That's why when you turn on a flat screen it pops right on, and the old tube type took a little while to come on.
The old tube types had to charge the tube after the power was turned on building a charge inside the tube slowly compared to new ones.
Also, the capacitors can be dangerous to handle, because they have gel in them just like batteries, and the gel can be harmful to humans.
I would recommend taking it to either Fry's, or to BestBuy.
They have special techs trained in the removal and replacement of these capacitors, as well as training of the proper handling of the damaged ones.
The electronics industry has a special repository that the bad parts are sent to, that way they can keep track of which companies the junk parts were coming from, length of time to failure, types of failures, and frequency of each type of failure.
I know you were hoping that this would be an easy fix, but sadly this is not the case.
Before you pay to get it repaired, get an estimate first from the electronics store...you may find the repair costs are as much as a new tv.
I hope that this helps you understand what has happened, and I hope you get it going again.
Good luck to you, and have a nice day.
