Question about Meade ETX-70 (240 x 70mm) Telescope

1 Answer

Hi, Original focus knob fell off my atx 70 and now the 'focus rod' goes inside the telescope instead of moving front part. Is there any way to fix it?

Thanks Joe. I have seen the screw but my problem was not the knob (it is very uncomfortable to use and i've replaced it already) but the 'focus rod' . I took telescope apart and now I know what the problem is. I have to go to well stocked hardware store anyway : )! thanks again.

The knob had a tiny set screw on the side of it-- that tightened down on the shaft.

See if you can tighten it back up. If it is missing take it to a well stocked hard ware store and see if you can find a replacement Allen style set-screw.

Thanks Joe. I've seen screw but problem was with the 'focus rod'. (I have replaced original knob already since its not very comfortable). I took scope apart and sorted problem out but still need to visit well stocked hardware shop. Thanks again.

Look at the link below for a FIX for a broken Dec knob. This is a common problem so once it is fixed do NOT overtighten.

Yes you bent the shaft on the knob or the gears inside the focuser. Order another complete focuser from Leica.

When I turn the focuser, the image never comes to focus. When I get to what I suspect is the end of the focus range, the tension on the knob firms up a little, but does not stop turning.

There is a rod inside that the focuser attaches too.

It may be broken inside or has come loose from the rod. Locate a local Astronomy club the members will help you figure it out.

Check the focus knob and make sure the small "set-screw" is tight and the knob is just not spinning around on the shaft.

DID you turn the knob enough to focus? Sometimes it may take 10 - 20 full turns.

Finally the focuser is attached to a "rod" inside the tube that moves the mirror back and forth to focus the scope. It could have come loose from the rod?

My focus knob does not work correctly, is this easy to fix?

There is a tiny set screw on the side of the knob. Make sure this is tight, and the knob is not just spinning around and around.

There is also a small rod inside -- that the focuser attaches to. If tightening the setscrew does not fix it, you will need to remove the focuser and see if it is detached from the rod. Make sure the scope is tilted BACK with the front of the scope UP a little or the mirror will slide to the front and possibly break.

My NexStar 8 SE doesn't focus. When the focuser knob is rotated either direction it moves the image up or down.

The knob could have come loose from the mirror. This would require a return to Celestron for repair or a complete disassembly of the rear of the scope,

You can remove the focuser, and MAYBE it is just detached from the rod inside that moves the mirror back and forth.

The focuser has probably come loose from the "rod" on the mirror.

Here is the focuser disassemble instructions:

LX10 won't come into focus. I'm not talking about blurry stars-it won't focus at all.

The focus knob connects to a small "rod" attached to the mirror housing. The rod may have slipped out of the small hole in the end of the focuser (inside).

Remove the focuser and reattach the "rod".

Telescope knob

Still not enough information, but taking a stab at it, I'll assume you mean the pinion rod that goes between the focus knobs, and engages a gear rack on the focuser. There are locations where they can be purchased, and you would need to provide the OD and pitch (teeth per radian) to match.
Try: http://www.pinionrod.com/ as a source.
