Check on the manufacturer's website what the default resolution of your laptop model is.

right click on desktop, -> properties -> settings -> screen resolution.

sometimes if you have an advanced graphics card/controller it can detect the ideal resolution for you.

Screen flashes colors

The issue (flashes" colored screens) you're facing could be related to drivers and could be resolved by updating the display drivers. Without the correct driver, the hardware or device that you want to use won't work properly.
Also refer to:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly
Let's try to boot the computer in low resolution mode and check the issue status.
Low resolution starts Windows using your current video driver and using low resolution and refresh rate settings. You can use this mode to reset your display settings.
Refer the section:
Enable low-resolution video (640×480)

Colour setting keeps reverting from 32 bits to 8 bits

Turn the laptop on and hold down the "Fn" key on the laptop's keyboard.

Tap the arrow key that has a picture of an open sun to make the laptop screen brighter.

The laptop will automatically save the adjustments after you release the "Fn" key.

Tap the arrow key that has a picture of a filled-in sun to make the laptop screen darker.

The laptop will automatically save the adjustments after you release the "Fn" key.

Screen Resolution

Click the "Start" menu. Click "Settings" and "Control Panel."

Choose "Display" and "Settings" in Windows 98, ME or XP. In Windows Vista, click "Appearance" and "Adjust Screen Resolution."

Click on the resolution bar and slide it to the right to lower the screen's resolution and to the left to raise the screen's resolution.

The optimum screen resolution usually depends on the size of the laptop screen.

The recommended resolution for a 15-inch screen is 1024 x 768, 17- to 19-inch screen is 1280 x 1024, and 20-inch screens is 1600 x 1200.

However, you can adjust the resolution to your personal preference.

Click ""Apply to see how the resolution looks on the laptop's monitor.

Click "OK" to save the resolution settings.

Color Setting

Click the "Start" menu. Click "Settings" and "Control Panel."

Choose "Display" and "Settings" in Windows 98, ME or XP.

In Windows Vista, click "Appearance" and "Adjust Screen Resolution."

Click "Colors." Choose 32-bit for a high color-pixel ratio that will make the colors brighter and bring out image details.

Choose 24-bit for a medium color-pixel ratio if the screen is too bright or if images are somewhat distorted.

Some older laptops have a 16-bit color setting, but this setting is no longer recommended as it will distort images and text.

Always Click "Apply" to see how the color setting looks on the laptop's monitor.

Click "OK" to save the color settings

hope this helps

How can I use my plasma tv as a monitor so I can connect my laptop computor

Assuming your laptop has an S Video output you would connect it to the S Video input of the television with an S video cable. Before doing so you should have turned the resolution on your laptop down as far as it will go. I believe the proper S Video resolution is 640 x 480. You can find an extensive resolutions list here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_resolutions

After setting the laptop at the resolution you're going to try you should turn it off (not restart it; actually turn it off). Now connect the S Video cable between the television and the laptop and turn the television on first before the laptop. Turn the laptop on and switch the television to the proper video input. Hold down the function (fn) button on the laptop and the dual monitor key (usually f5 or f8) for about 15 seconds or longer until you get an image on the television screen.

Everything on the screen appears stretched

If you can, set the Screen resolution to the maximum native resolution your monitor supports by adjusting the slider. to 1680x1050, if you can set it to that, then Windows will automatically display at the proper aspect ratio, and the monitor will not have to stretch anything. Setting your screen resolution to match your monitor's native resolution is, by far, the preferred solution to get you the best looking display.
If that specific resolution is not available, then you'll need to try resolutions that are smaller than that, but ideally with the same aspect ratio. 1512x945, for example, would maintain the same aspect ratio. Not all monitors handle running at less than their optimal resolution well, and it may result in a slightly fuzzy display, but it won't be horizontally stretched. If this fails to fix the problem it could be a problem with your video card

I suspect that you may be using a cable or sat box rather than that set's internal atsc tuner.
Sometimes these boxes are not set up properly or reset themselves to a lower resolution.
Go into your box's settings menu nd look for the resolution settings. Verify that all of the modes or at least the maximum resolution for your set is enabled.
