Question about Cnet Wireless-G CAR-854 Router (CAR854)

Open Question

Hi I have been trying to configure port forwarding on a CNET CAR 854 router to allow VNC and FTP access from the WAN without any success. I currently have an active DYNDNS account that is synced with the WAN side IP of the router and both the VNC and FTP applications have been configured correctly. We tested this assumption by plugging in a preconfigured Billion router and then tried to access both VNC and FTP over the WAN with success. I have made sure that the port forward rules on the CNET point to the correct ports (Public & Local) as well as the correct IP of the server in question. Using the port testing application from portforward.com shows that both 5900 (VNC) and 21 (FTP) ports are open and that communication is possible. When launching VNC I get an error, 10061 VNC cannot connect to host: connection refused. I also get something similar when trying to connect to the FTP server over the WAN. Regards Chris Pienaar

SOURCE: cnet CWR-854 does not work

You may be advised to use an RJ45 LAN cable to try the following, then use the wireless connection when all ais up and running. The default Login ID and Password is ?root? with password ?1234?. This Wireless Access Point?s default IP address is 192.168.1.253, You can reset this Wireless Access Point back to its default settings by clicking on Reset button, and then press OK button to confirm your decision. Note: you can also hold down the reset button on this Wireless Access Point?s panel for more than 10 seconds to reset its default settings back to factory default. If the reset doesnt work turn off router then on again first, but if the reset doesnt work, the router may need to be replaced.

I need to connect to my work PC from my home, i try to use VNC & remote desktop but I can't configure it right, Any advice?

Hi,

Make sure that you have a rule in your software firewall to allow VNC through.
You also need to make sure that your routers firewall has the correct ports forwarded.

Can I suggest you try TeamViewer
Its Free for personal use, you need a license for business
Its probably the most powerfull remote software around

Its a lot easier to use and has much more features than VNC

I have a Buffalo WBMR-G54 ADSL Router. The local IP address of the router is 192.168.1.1. My Medion desktop computer connects connects to my Buffalo router using an Ethernet cable. I use the wireless...

> Zone Alarm free firewall and Avast antivirus have been installed on both computers

Your router is already acting as a "firewall" to block "unsolicited" traffic from reaching the computers on your LAN. So, unless you use Zone Alarm to block "outgoing" connections
(such as a computer-virus would try to make when "calling-home", there's little benefit
to using the Zone Alarm software.

> If I use Internet explorer to connect to http://myname.dyndns.org, Internet Explorer does connect successfully to the network. However, it invites me to enter the username and password for my Buffalo WBMR-G54 router - not for the storage drive.

While you are "forwarding" TCP port 21, you are not "forwarding" TCP port 80 (as used by the 'http://' protocol). So, when you connect from the Internet to your "public" IP-address, it is the router that responds, rather than one of your computers inside your LAN.

IMHO, it is "bad" that your router's web-interface is "exposed" to attacks from the Internet.
Either "forward" TCP port 80, or configure the router to use a _different_ port number for "remote management".

> If I enter the Router user name and password, that allows me to access the Router menus via the Internet, which confirms that my account at DynDns has translated the IP address successfully.

Correct. Hopefully, you're the only one who knows the correct username/password, and there is nobody that is doing "brute-force" attacks on your router, trying to login to "hijack" your router.

> if I use Internet Explorer or FileZilla to access ftp://myname.dyndns.org, I cannot connect to the router

Correct. The 'ftp://' protocol uses TCP port 21, which the router is "forwarding" to one of the computers on your LAN.

> or the storage drive - so I cannot access any of my files remotely.
> FileZilla reports -Status: Resolving address of bob1944.dyndns.org
> Status: Connecting to 78.144.xxx.xxx:21...
> Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message

So far, so good.

Is FileZilla expecting a "specific" content in that "welcome" message, or will "any" response be "close-enough" ?

On a computer on the Internet, open a command-line prompt:

Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD
Press Enter
Enter FTP bob1944.dyndns.org
Press Enter
Do you get a "connecting" message?
Do you get a "connected" message?
Do you see the "welcome" message?

Note that the FTP protocol usually uses _two_ ports for File Transfer:

* port 21 for "control" (sending/receiving commands/responses)
* a "random" port for "data" transfers (including directory-listings)

It's this "random" port that your router is not forwarding.

However, some FTP-clients (probably including FileZilla) and some FTP-servers
support "passive" mode, where both the "control" and the "data" connections "share" port 21.

So, configure FileZilla to use "passive" mode, and _hope_ that your FTP-server supports "passive" mode.

How will i do port forward settings ?

Your router model is CWR-854, I suppose.
Port forwarding instruction for your Cnet Wireless CNET CWR-854 Router can be found here. Choose the program for which you want the port to be forwarded or use the Default Guide.

How to enable WAN IP in a DI-604 Router for 3 computers

"I wanna make the 2nd pc a server but it isn't accessible through the WAN ip. "

Well that explains everything. If you want to get to 192.168.0.102 from the internet, you need to tell the router where to send packets. You do this by going to the ADVANCED section and configuring Virtual Servers. For example: If you are setting up the computer at 102 as a ftp server, ftp uses port 21. The name would be FTP, private IP would be 192.168.0.102, Protocol is TCP, and the Private and Public ports would normally both be 21. Don't forget to Enable the rule.

What this does is tell the router that when ever a request comes in on port 21, it should forward it to 192.168.0.102. To access the external side of the router you need to go to 70.55.84.233 (according to the image you posted)

Ftp - port forwarding

Hello.. If you already have the port numbers needed and static IP on your computer, you can do the following steps to open them on your router:

1. connect a computer to the router wired.
2. Launch an internet browser and type in http://192.168.2.1. Use the user name and password that you have set for your router.
3. Click on the Firewall tab, then Port Forwarding
4. For the Protocol, specify if the port you will open is TCP or UDP.
5. Set the port numbers on both WAN and LAN port range then set the Static IP address on the textbox then click add. After doing that, check if you have an apply, save or ok button and click on that.

Here is the site for the user guide of your router.

If you do not know how to set a static IP on the computer, you can do the steps from this link. This depends on the operating system of the computer you are using. Make sure to set an IP address in the range of 192.168.2.x (x being a number from 2- 200).

Ftp server

What is the name of the software? Is that an FTP software?
Anyway if you are using DX-E401 Router you can enable DMZ (demilitarized zone) to your PC.

1.access your router configuration page (default ip: 192.168.0.1)
2.go to advanced tab
3.select DMZ
4.select enable then type the ip address of your server pc
5.apply settings

after that have someone try to access the files in your pc.
if the software you installed is ftp software then have them access it by this

ftp://internet_ip

the "internet ip" is the ip address found in the STATUS TAB of your router under the WAN catergory.

If this software you mentioned is using any particular application ports, you will have to open those ports for your server PC.
In that case you will to configure VIRTUAL SERVER. It's the actual term used by dynex. for you to have a general idea how to configure your pc behind your router please go to this link

http://www.dynexproducts.com/skins/skin_1/Topics/Documents/DX-E401_Manual.pdf

Virtual server configuration is in pages 22-23. It has detailed explanation of the terms used.

Hope this helps!

Sonicwall Pro 300 DMZ Problem

If you're within a network and try connecting to computers on it with the WAN public IP, it simply won't work - you must use the network IP. On an external Internet connection, it should connect fine to the public IP. If you have access to an external machine (remote desktop), or if you know of an FTP proxy, you can try it that way. I also believe http://www.webftp.co.uk/ a web based FTP client would act as somewhat of a proxy, you could try that with the public IP and see how you go.
