Question about Brother MultiFunction Center MFC-440CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

Unable to print code 50

I have checked the user guide on line but there is no reference code 50 or code 30 which it also seems to show. I've removed all paper jams and have turned the printer off for 1 hour hoping it would reset itself. Resently put refills rather than Brother ink cartridges. Is there anything else I can do

Yup, had a paper jam, removed the offending piece, turned printer off and on and raised and lowered lid and did everything possible to resolve (any other printer would have been fixed), but ooohhh nooo, now I only get "unable to print error 50" and same with "error 30". What the heck do these error codes mean??? How do I fix my printer???

Now I get error 30, after checking voltage and plugging into different outlets, bypassing power strips, and turning on and off. Still no go on printing.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Checked for any small bits of paper...none. Getting an error code 30 now.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Tried solutions offered and now getting an error code 30.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Well, I have already updated the software and I have repeatedly turned the printer off (unplugged it as well) for extended periods. Still getting error code 30.....I am about to scream in frustration!!!

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Fuse lamp??? And I do not have an HP printer. It is a Brother MFC 440 CN. And I found no reference to error code 30. As I am not a repair type person (far from it!), if error code 30 is the same as error code 50, the fuser or fuse lamp or whatever, I am not sure how I would go about fixing this problem anyway. How difficult is it??? Should I just throw the printer out???.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Still getting error code 30. And I am sorry, but page 30 does not have troubleshooting. Could not find the troubleshooting in the pdf file sent.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

    Didn't help.

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

What exactly is error code 30?? Anyone really know???

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Just error code 30....and absolutley NO piece of paper anywhere to be found and even my husband had a look...no paper. Brother MFCs must just be pieces of junk if a little paper jam does this to them!!! Our old HP printer has had several paper jams and just removing the paper cleared the problem immediately. What gives with Brother?

  • ladywatts Aug 21, 2008

Thanks, but now getting error code 50 again.

  • ladywatts Aug 22, 2008

    Sigh.....nada...error 50 still lives.

  • ladywatts Aug 22, 2008

Thanks, everyone, I have had it for today with the demon printer from hell. Still nothing but errors 50 and 30...maybe tomorrow.

  • ladywatts Aug 23, 2008

Well, nothing has worked and I am giving up. None of the experts could help me with my problem, though they all had good suggestions. The last solution was to bring in expert technical help. Too much trouble, too expensive, will bite the bullet and get a new printer...an HP this time.

  • lebong Nov 27, 2008

Just the same as ladywatt. I had a paper jam. After removing the paper and turning the machine on and off (both long and short periods), I get nothing but the old "Unable to Print 50" notice.

  • eiluj_3 Jan 31, 2009

I get the -30 error code when I print to PDF and then try to open it.

What error code do you receive? Is it 30 only or does it toggle between 30 and 50 (watch some more 5 minutes!).

Anyway, two solution for this named errors:
1. Only error 30:
There IS some paper piece left inside the printer. Mostly could this be found on the very very left side (seeing from front as in normal use). Open scanner and have a good look into the edges. You will find a small piece of paper left there.

2. 30 and 50 (toggling)

Looks like the printer is using alot of ur time trying to fix it.
Looks like its faulty and it might be time to upgrade because it will be too

I think that is the best fix becuase it will be too expensiv to fix

Those error messages that you're getting is a sweet way of telling you that the printer is KAPUT.

For example :

Paper Jam but there's no paper inside - it's the paper sensor malfunctioning.

Cartridge not recognized - it's not the cart, the "cart sensor" stopped sensing anything.

Error code ## - the logic board that we are not sure what it's supposed to do is also malfunctioning.

Hope this clears up

    *****
The above information applies to those error codes that manufacturers website & tech support reps can't even give you the exact answer.

If the error codes can't be found in your user manual & manufacturer's website OR from their tech reps, it means service or replacement.

"Resently put refills rather than Brother ink cartridges."

That caused the problem in the first place. Hope you don't do the same with your next printer.

Try this simple reset:
I'll bet you are a little frustrated by now.

Turn off your printer and unplug it.
Open the paper jam door and gently push the paper roller forward until it clicks
Close the door
Plug your printer back in
Turn it back on.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using Fix Ya

Error Code E50 means that the fuser unit has been damaged and needs replacing.

Brother's toll free customer service number is 1-800-284-4329. They can tell you what you might do to verify this diagnosis. and slos what E30 means which I do not know.

For the closest service center to you- you can call this number 1-800-284-4357 for that information.

Good luck to you. I hope that you have an answer soon to this problem, and I regret that I could not be of more help to you.

You stated that you replaced the cartridges with refills.
This is sounding like you have a bad smart chip on them, or it will not accept refills.

I suggest getting OEM new and going from there

An error code 50 can also be a damaged fuser.

But you said you are only getting an error code 30 now.

The 2 can be related. If there is a small piece of paper stuck down inside the fuser (the only way you would be able to see it is to remove the fuser and inspect)

Error 50 on Brother is paper Jam, open the door at the back and check again, a small fragment of paper may jam the printer.

    Problem:
During printer warmup cycle a 50 error message is displayed on the LCD panel.

    Cause:
90% of the time this is caused by a burnt out quartz fusing lamp (Click here for information on how to test the fusing lamp). The DC controller does not see the fuser get up to operating temperature and produces the error message.

    Solution:
Replace the necessary parts, all of which are included in this repair kit (along with easy to follow directions).

    Kit Includes:

    • Quartz Fusing Lamp
    • Fully illustrated instructions for easy installation

Try updating your printer's software , that should fix that problem.
Then power cycle your printer meaning turn off the printer for about 5 minutes then try it again...

Hope that helps.......

Check properly if a small piece is still remaining it will show that error.while removing the paper the paper sensor has been moved.because you would have pulled the paper hardly.adjust that lens below the paper feeder gears.this may solve it.thanks.please rate the solution.keep me updated.

50 PRINTER ERROR
A problem exists with the customer’s line voltage.
1. Remove the printer from any UPS supplies, additional power supplies, or power strips.
2. Plug the printer into a wall outlet and see if this resolves the problem.
3. If the printer is already plugged into a wall outlet, try another power source in the building that is independent of the one currently being used.
4. The line voltage and current source at the printer location might need to be inspected to ensure that it meets the printer’s electrical specifications.

    50 FUSER ERROR
    A fuser error has occurred.
    1. Turn the printer off, wait 10 minutes, and
    then turn the printer on.
    2. If the message persists, reseat the fuser.
If that does not work, replace the fuser.
    To check the fuser, turn
the printer off and remove the fuser. Measure the resistance between
    the fuser connectors.
If it is not within the proper range, replace
    the fuser.
If there is not continuity between the fuser connectors
neutral and hot with the fuser removed, replace the fuser.
    If the
problem is not related to the fuser, replace the engine controller
    board.

Give this a try..

* Go to Printers and Faxes, right-click your printer and Disable
* Turn off printer (unplug the power)
* Carefully Remove All Cartridges
* Wait for about 5 mins. Turn on printer without cartridges.
* Leave it on for about 2 mins. Turn it off.
* Put the cartridges back in then turn on printer.
* Go to Printers and Faxes again then Enable the printer.

Check if you can print now.

So dont let me be a withness of murderer:
There is no paper sicking within the machine! The jam had lifted the encoder strip out of the ph. After you have fixed it simppy stick some very thin scotch tape onto the ph cover to avoid further liftings (that will happen quite often...)
