Question about Jandy Laars LX Pool Heater / 400,000 BTU / Natural Gas

1 Answer

I have a LX and the fan blows for about 20 seconds and then I hear what sounds like a motor. My heater wasn't used all winter and the filter needs cleaning. I cleaned the basket. What do you think the problem is?

Inadequate water flow makes the motor sound. Clean your filters and it should go away. If not, it could be a faulty bypass valve.

Both AC and Heat blow the same air.

Sounds like a flow flap or vacuum control head issue. The system uses 1 blower motor and one fan resistor. Both systems are intergrated to produce a BLENDED temperature. This means that to raise A/C temps originating at say 20 degrees to come out of the ducts at 45 degrees for cooling you need airflow through the heater core WHILE the A/C is on.
This is done with a blender flap. Hot air that is potentially matching the water thermostat (165 degrees) is expelled to blend with the 20 degree air to raise the discharge temperature to 45 degrees and up.
In winter, the A/C is engaged by design to keep the compressor lubed with oil. Usually this happens in Defroster mode, but through either Design or defect, may occur in heat position.
Now some of the Digital Climate control units have a Diagnostic sequence you can activate with certain button pushing combinations. Research Your Model, Year and then Climate Control Diagnostics on the internet. The sequence is something Dealers know about.
This Diagnostics would identify a malfunctioning Flap valve actuator.
I recommend people to visit a Salvage yard which allows you to dismantle a car yourself and see how the car is built.
Hope this helps and makes sense to you.

Running but no cool air blowing

Problem #1:Outdoor condensing fan motor has stopped running. This problem could be caused by a bad motor run capacitor. If your motor capacitor is not the problem, then more than likely you need a new motor. Is the fan blade tight, stiff or hard to turn? If the fan blade is hard to turn then you probably need a new motor. Problem #2: Air conditioner compressor will not start. When power is applied to the air conditioning outdoor unit the fan starts, but you hear a sound like the compressor is trying to start, "UGGG"..., for about 5 to 10 seconds and then all you hear is the outdoor condenser fan run. The compressor is locked and will not start. What is happening is the compressor is trying to start, but because the compressor motor is locked it tries to start for a few seconds and then because of the high amperage being drawn goes off on internal overload. The internal overload protects the compressor windings from overheating and burning up. I see this many times during the start of the air conditioning season. Some compressors just have a hard time starting after sitting all winter long. Some compressors are locked up so bad that I can not start them and must tell my customer that they need a new compressor . Many times I can get the compressor started again without having to buy a new compressor or new air conditioning system by using the device that is called, "Super-Boost." I keep two or three of these on the truck. They have saved many of my customers from having to buy new air conditioning systems

I would definitly try to give your heater a through cleaning before before giving up on it. Remove screws that hold back cover on and remove cover. There shoulb be a fiter directly behind it,remove it and give it a through cleaning. I don't know on the new ones if the filter is made of foam material, the older ones like mine are.It is safe to wash them in warm water and a little dish soap. Rinse fully and pat dry. Clean any lint, hair, dust or any other foreign material from fan motor. Blow it out with compressed air if you can. You can use a tooth brush to clean around motor shaft and air ports on motor. You can use a couple of drops of fine grade machine oil on motor shaft, such as 3 in 1 oil or WD-40. Wipe off excess. Lightly brush heating elements and reassemble. I hope this works for you. When the vehicle is warm grab the heater core hoses. There is two of them. They go into the firewall at the back of the motor. If both of them are hot then that means you have a leaking heater core a clogged thermostat or air in your cooling system. If only one of the hoses is hot that means your heater core is clogged. It will bea good idea to take one off and run water through the heater core with a garden hose for 3-4 minutes as this flush out any clogs in heater core. Then reconect hose. Take off radiator cap and let vehicle run for 20-30 minutes and make sure there are no air bubbles in radiator. At first there will be many and you will need to keep adding coolant. once allthe bubles stop you know you got the air out

No air coming out of the vents

It sounds like the heater motor may not be operating. When you switch the heater fan on can you hear the motor running? If not then it may have blown the heater fan fuse, check the fuse's and then try it again. If the fuse is ok then it could be a faulty switch or fan motor.

Check your air filter, make sure all registers are open full and there is no restriction in all ducts. Could be an unbalanced fan, clean the squirll cage fan with a brush and vacuum.

5 year old Laars 25,000 LX won't ignite.

The low pressure indicator is for the gas pressure not the water pressure. The heater won't ignite because it's not getting gas to the igniter. Check gas supply, if okay, check gas connections, valves, etc.

The 1 HP motor should be fine on the jacuzzi.

It sounds like you blew the resistor. A resistor is usually in place to prevent fire. If you did not blow the resistor it probably is a fuse. Check for this problem under recalls for that particular model year.
