Question about Heating & Cooling

Open Question

SW6DEA GAS HEATER UNIT FLAME WILL NOT STAY ALIGHT ! Switching gas water heater unit on inside the RV, the red light comes on and approx 6 to 8 seconds later ( normal time cycle ) the gas flame lights up OK but goes out again after approx. 6 to 8 seconds with the red light going out at the same time. Leaving the unit switched on inside the RV, after a further 6 to 8 seconds, the red light comes back on automatically and repeats the start up cycle over - again without success. *4 times unsuccessful. I have checked and cleaned both of the probes on the igniter unit and checked/cleaned out the gas flow jet - all appeared clean & OK. Local dealer where we bought the caravan new ( 4 years ago ) has not experienced this problem to date so they cannot advise and I have not been able to contact the manufacturer so far. Would appreciate your assistance and problem diagnosis. Sincere thanks, Ray S.

Hello
When you replaced the thermocouple and you lit the pilot was the pilot flame surrounding the center of the bulb of the thermocouple?

The only other option if the thermocouple is in the right position would be to replace the gas valve.

SOURCE: I have a Williams uniflow recessed gas wall heater model 57DW. The pilot light doesn't stay lit even after thermocouple has been replaced. I suspect the solenoid is bad.

This would be the flame failure device not work / gas valve .

Why wont my everdure gas heater stay alight

Some heaters have to be "warmed up" by holding the button down for approx. 30 seconds after it lights. These are ones with whats called a "thermocouple". The thermocouple has to remain a certain temp. or the unit will shut off. If the thermocouple goes bad, it can be replaced

Richmond direct vent water heater

The pilot lights then heats/sends a signal to open gas for burner then(burner)should stay on but if valve shuts the gas off, then have your unit checked. What ever you do,DON'T MESS WITH IT IF GAS/FLAME ON!!!!!. These systems come with a safety feature that allows gas to go on only when safe!!!!

Reliance is made by AO Smith company, and air intake located on bottom of unit.
Make sure you have adequate incoming air and vent is working.
Remember, the pilot is located upwards from the viewing sight-glass, so it is sometimes difficult to see pilot.
Pilot flame must burn clear blue, with bits of yellow and red. Yellow flame means inadequate air supply or venting.

I have a new Atwood G6A-7 water heater. The pilot lights fine but gas flow, when it turns on, is so strong it will blow the pilot out. Certain times, it sounds and looks like a mini fire ball going

Clean burner tube with proper brush, such as long spring type for bar-b-Q burner tube that are available at most hardware stores, and make sure you have new burner tube aligned properly (straight on) with brass orifice on gas control. Then be sure to adjust air shutter for nice blue flame, with little orange at tip. Do not give so much air that flame roars or jumps off the end of the burner tube. Too many people think more air, less fuel, but actually, when flame roaring and jumping off end of tube, the heat passes through faster and it takes longer to heat the water inside the tank. Like I said, only enough air to have quiet, steady blue flame. If your not giving it enough air, you'll see dark soot on trailer above water heater, which indicates burning too rich, need more air, or perhaps pilot is partially plugged. Pilot flame should also be blue, not yellow/orange. Small air intake hole on side of fitting just before pilot tube can get spider web, or debris in it as well. Use air to blow that out or a piece of wire like a paper-clip to clean inside that hole.

Reliant 501 Natural Gas won't stay lit

Reliance water heater?
Thermocouple is good if the pilot stays lit continuously.

501 is older model. Unknown if this unit has FVIR protection and sealed combustion chamber or open air intake on front of unit.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Reliance-2006-Service-Handbook.pdf

With FVIR protection:
Get more fresh air to the unit.
Clean the flame arrestor screen.
Test and replace the thermocouple:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-test-water-heater-thermocouple.html
Inspect and clean burner and combustion parts
Test gas pressure, bleed air out of gas line.
Replace gas control valve.
Test draft air by lighting match and see if smoke is pulled into the vent pipe at draft hood on top of tank.

If you pull pressure relief valve open slightly (carefully ) and water shoots out, your good. The red light inside is not overtemp, it is to alert you to the fact that the heater did not ignite. If your sure you have by-pass in proper position on back of tank, try removing the cut-off that is inline by pressure relief valve. It is enclosed in that small clear plastic jacket and wire runs to thermostat. Pull at each end and remove it from the circuit, then put the male spade from wire directly on thermostat connector where the cut -out was attached, then try water heater. If it works, replace that cut out. Don't leave it off, it's a safety device that shuts off gas to water heater in case of flame up.

Make sure flame is good under thermocouple probe so that it gets proper sensing of flame, and if that's o.k., before you change gas control, remove thermocouple fitting where it attaches to gas control and spray wd-40 in the hole and twirl up some steel wool and push it in the hole and twirl it to try and clean the surface inside there as well. Then spray it out with WD-40 once more to flush out shavings etc, and if you have compressed air, blow it out as well. Now re-attach fitting and snug it, then re-try pilot again. If it works, great if not replace gas control. Let me know the results. You do realize that it should be a certified technician who changes that gas control if necessary, correct?

Your on right track. When this happens and small flame still there, pull wire(s) off at gas valve, or test for voltage from ECO to gas valve. No voltage, then there should be no gas. Change gas valve.

The electronic ignition on a gas water heater will not heat up and glow red to ignite the gas to heat the water atwood r/v water heater

You won't see any red glow until the burner ignites and burns for a while. Its only an ignitor and flame sensor, not a glow plug style. The ignitor has to provide spark for gas to ignite, then it also senses the flame and keeps gas flow coming. What exactly is happening when you turn it to on?

Quattro Plus heater will not stay alight

Does this unit have a thermocoupling?

If so replace it. (6 bucks)
It is the units flame sensor and they routinely go bad.
When they no longer sense flame the unit will shut off gas to the ignitor/burner.
It will only stay lit when you are manualy holding the button.
