Question about Welding Tools

Open Question

I have a Matco PCS20 Plasma cutter that wont start the pilot arc, it started to fail at random and now it wont start at all. I have changed the torch parts (consumables) ,cleaned contacts on all the connector terminals and inside the 2 main contactors (Pilot Arc and Main Contactors (Relays)) Ohmed out all torch lead wiring and checked out the capacitors and diodes on the circuit board. All LED's light, the fan comes on, and the air blows out of the tip when the button is pressed just NO ARC. Air Presssure is set at 65PSI in setup mode (switch on front) and is clean and dry.

SOURCE: plazma cutter/no arc

The Cutmaster 50 used two different CD "Capacitor Discharge" Boards. The only ones I have seen a lot of issues with were the smaller ones that are 3.5" X 4"

I have worked on several of the them over the last few months. Even though you might see a spark at the spark gap on the board it might not be sufficient to create a pilot arc.

If your air pressure and so forth are correct your issue is most likely the two white capacitors on the CD board.

Check your consumbales to be sure they are tight in the torch head. Check your ground be sure it's good and connected to the pc you are cutting. Make sure you are running air at 65 to 70 psi as it exits the torch. Email me if you have any other questions.

Pulsating Arc

Sounds like one or two of the power diodes are defective (open), producing a half wave pulse instead of full wave, giving it a dotting effect.

Plasma cutters support

Plasma Arc cutting is an excellent choice for most cutting applications but it is particularly well suited for applications where speed and excellent cut quality are important. Because of the intense heat of the plasma arc – around 40,000° F compared to 5,700° F, with gases used with Oxy-Fuel torches – the cut is clean with little or no dross.
