Make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
hope this helps

Can I use LPHD-UP hard drive with only the USB cord for power?

No. It needs a power supply. 3.5" harddrives need power supplies. 2.5" hardrives (laptop hardrives) can run off USB power.

I got an old laptop and I bought a new toshiba laptop I just wanna ask how do I transfer my application and files from my old laptop to a new one using external hardrive,also wat external hardrive,and also...

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

I have a smartdisk firelite hardrive, is it possible to transfer the data onto a windows7 laptop. Model number of the hardrive FWFL40-N

Yes, it will work if the disk is operational and the laptop has an firewire port with all the drivers installed.
Just connect the disk and it will appear in Computer as an external disk.

My hardrive "simpledrive" model 96300-41001-156

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

You have what is call a USB POWER Y ADAPTER: this is designed to provide extra current to your USB HDD drive from a second PC USB port. Plug the end with two USB connectors to your PC/LAPTOP and the single-ended plug to your drive.
Hope it helps! Let me know how you go.

I cant seem to find my portable external hardrive in "my computer" when i connect to my laptop

right click on my computer and select manage, go to disk management (under storage) and see if the drive appears here. if so it's probably trying to use a letter for drive which is already in use. If youright click on the drive you can change the drive letter to one that is free.

If not appearing as above check your system devices in device manager - it should apear under USB controller as a storage device

Power BOX supply cord problem or hardrive problem?

Check these settings first. In a clear spot on the screen where no icons are, right click and go to properties, box opens and at top should list from R to L, themes-desktop-screensaver-appearance-advanced. click on screensaver, close to bottom click on power, another box should open, click on power schemes, make sure it's set to portable/laptop, and at bottom make sure settings for plugged in are are set to never. If it's not that then you have a bad power supply cord, or a bad power supply unit in laptop. If it's new and under warranty take it in and have replaced if not warrantied then will cost you about 100-150, just a guess!! hope this helps. But it sounds like the supply cord making the beeping noise might be bad. Make sure it's plugged all the way in as well.

7210gx won't power on.

You know what its probably that the power button is not connected to the motherboard. Pull the power button piece back out and reconnect the cable on both sides.

If that doesnt do it, the plastic power button itself might be broken. You can replace that whole button board to fix it. usually $60-$80 for the part (gateway does not sell parts so the companies that do are expensive)

But check that cable first and let us know if it works.
