Question about HP StorageWorks EVA5000 (A7370A) Hard Drive Array

2 Answers

I'm considering buying a used HP Storageworks EVA5000. It has everything except for drives. I happen to have about 30 146GB drives that I can confirm are compatible (they HP-branded Seagate drives and their model number is listed in the EVA5000 firmware files). However I am shopping for some 300GB drives (Seagate) and I have concerns that because they are not HP-branded they may not work in this system. Can regular Seagate fibre channel drives be used in an EVA5000 or do I need to shop for specific HP-branded ones?

The EVA5000 is not a personal computer. It is a 168 drive fibre-channel storage fabric.

    Hi,

Thanks for you response, but my question is specifically about using non-OEM (i.e. not HP, not Compaq branded) Seagate drives. It appears from my research that the EVA controller will flash the firmware on installed disks with a special firmware provided by HP. I know with vendors such as NetApp that you can use non-NetApp drives provided you flash them with the NetApp firmware yourself (technically tricky, but doable).

What I'm wondering is if there is any similar path that will allow the EVA to use non-OEM Seagate drives (assuming the non-OEM drive is the same as some rebranded HP drive that is supported).

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If your concen is if you can purchase a Seagate 300gb you need to purchase a FATA hard drive that has VCS v3.020 or later. You cannot use FATA drives without having VCS v3.020 installed.

I'm considering buying a used - ezrahite_87.jpg

You can refer to the manual below for more info about FATA hard drives

HP StorageWorks EVA5000

You can download the VCS Sodtware on the link below

If you will ask me which one to purchase i suggest you purchase the recommended by HP. So that in case it encounters a problem HP can support it. Keep on mind that products compatibility is buyers responsibility.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

Hi - with that questions is let me be honest with you. If you can install the firmware to non HP/Compact disk then most likely it would work but haven't tried to do it. Because the firmware is the software that allows you to use the disk to the device

Hi

usually for personal computers, what is important is the type of hard disk and circuit board support is necessary to determine if they want to upgrade for example, if your motherboard has SATA ports so you can upgrade your hard drive using SATA hard disk, meaning you do not have here look at the brand because it is based on the support of your motherboard.
different about your problem, because it is devoted to a kind of restricted and limited support. mean you have to upgrade by using the specific parts and according to the type you need. is strongly recommended to use hardware that has been recommended by the supplier to resolve errors occur.

Because the DAT72 can copy 72GB with 2:1 compressed, and it's native capability is 36GB in the most. So you can try to copy less than 30GB data to it or try to enable the drive's compress mode.

Besides buying a new one, if you have the knowledge, you can try to open the tape drive and clean it from the dust it may have. You should also clean all the rubber roller's that thouch the tape (when it is inserted) with a cotton swab with some alcohol.
