Bob, sounds like it is working as designed. If the temp indicates 97, of course it won't fire if you set 84 as the temp (97) is already above that. When you set 100, it is higher than 97 and the unit attempts to raise the temp those 3 degrees. If you don't think the water is already at 97, then there is a calibration problem with the temp sensor.
Earliest versions of Rheem tankless 2006-8 let you set temperature up to 140 degrees F using remote. However the hotter setting caused error codes because the burner cannot keep up with both high temperature and large volume of hot water rushing through pipe. Especially in winter with cooler incoming water that must be heated more to reach temperature set point. The burner simply cannot keep up. So Rheem changed maximum temperature at remote control to tepid 120 degrees, which is not hot enough for folks wanting hot shower, or folks filling whirlpool tub because water in tub cools before tub fills.
That temp is normal especially considering the ambient temp. A 50/50 antifreeze/water mix not only prevents freezing but raises the boil temp. The pressure in the system also does that. So, in reality, your boil temp is above 230 degrees.
That is a NONprogramable T-stat. There is no program to overide, therefore there is no need for a "hold" option. To set the temp, place the switch on the side marked
COOL
OFF
HEAT
to the desired setting, and push the up down arrows on the front until the display shows 80.
The DISPLAY will revert back to the current room temperature within a few seconds, and will keep the unit on until it reaches the desired temp.
The set temperature remains at 80, it just shows the current room temp.
