Make sure the receiver's remote 'eye' is not exposed to high infrared energy from other sources, like the sun.

Try this advice:

"Dead" Remotes Can Be Saved

How to Re-Start Your "Dead" Remote Control

This only takes about a minute and will restart 1 in 3 "Dead" Original Remote Controls. Good Luck!

-----------------------------

Step 1- Pull the batteries out of the remote and leave them out until Step 4.

Step 2- Press and release each and every button one at a time on the remote control until every button has been pressed and released at least once!

Step 3- If your remote has slide switches, you must move the switch to each position then repeat the button pushing in Step 2.

(When you're done, be sure to put the slide switch in the correct position to operate the unit the remote came with!)

Step 4- Put the batteries back into the remote, being very careful to install them correctly.

New batteries should be used if you're not sure about the old ones.

Step 5- Try the remote.

Special Note:

If you have a digital camera, camcorder or camera phone you can test the remote to see if it is emitting a signal. Face the remote towards the lens of the digital unit until you can see the front of the remote. Depress any button on the remote. You should see a light (steady, blink or flashing) being emitted from the remote. If you do then the problem might not be the remote but the sensor on the unit.

If it works, Great!

If not, it's time to call 1-800-Remotes or use this website to order a new remote.

Find new or replacement remotes:

or eBay: search for "(model) remotes", check the 'include description

I've got a Sony STR-K880 Cinema surround system and the remote control won't work it anymore! The only thing it will do is turn the system off when I push the'AV I-O' button and the &#

I had the same problem. Found the fix in this document
STR-K880 service manual
On the amp, while powered off:
"While depressing the INPUT MODE button, press the POWER button to turn on the main power."
You may need to do this more than once.
This switches command mode between AV1 and AV2.

Here are the list of Sony remote codes :
5017, 5023, 5028, 5029, 5030, 5031, 5032, 5033, 5095, 5096, 5097, 5113, 5117, 5121, 5125, 5129, 5133, 5134, 5136, 5146, 5162, 5163, 5169, 5170, 5171, 5172

Here is how to program the remote.
  1. Turn on the Receiver.
  2. Press and hold AUX and OK at the same time.
  3. Release both the AUX key and the OK key at the same time. All the Mode keys should flash twice.
  4. Enter the four digit setup code and the AUX key will flash three times indicating correct entry and return to normal operation.
  5. Point the remote at the Receiver and press the power button. If it turns off the receiver it is now programmed. If not Repeat steps 2-5 until the remote turns off the unit.
Good Luck,
Robert

Channel cut out

Stereo Tech: Sounds like you definitly have a broken solder connection on the main PC board. A bad solder connection is tricky to find somtimes if one is not familiar with exactly what it looks like (kinda like mt st helens with a ring around the top) if you attempt this yourself DO NOT MAKE A SOLDER BRIDGE you will open pandoras box. Good luck
