Http://majorgeeks.com/DriverMax_d5260.html Win7/Vista/XP . DriverMax is a new tool that allows you to download the latest driver updates for your computer. No more searching for rare drivers on discs or on the web or inserting one installation CD after the other. Just create a free account, log in, and start downloading the updates that you need.
You can also export all your current drivers (or just the ones that work ok) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place!
Most of the situations when Windows is running slower are caused by faulty driver installations. Windows stores all versions of older drivers just in case you want to go back; sometimes it messes up older versions with more recent ones. The Export Wizard will only export the drivers you select by copying the needed files to a folder or a compressed ZIP file.
After reinstalling Windows all drivers will be back in place in less than 5 minutes - sparing you of searching, inserting disc after disk and losing precious time. The Import Drivers wizard allows you to install all the drivers that you exported earlier. The entire operation might take up to 5-10 minutes.
Just one single computer restart will be required after all drivers are reinstalled!
DriverMax is able to display a complete report of all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. This feature can also be very useful when you want to analyze the differences between the drivers installed on different machines. Hope this helps

By now you know you have a driver issue. I am going to point you to a site that will correct your issues and should get you going again. Go to Reimage.com. The software will cost you $69 for one licence and if you have 3 PC's then by the 3 pack for $99. Why do I point you here? Easy your time is worth something. Don't waste it guessing. Driver crashes are the hardest to solve. You don't know what the conflict is or what DLL is corrupt. I use this company to fix clients like you. The end result is always a happy one. You should do a disk repair under properties of the C drive and then a defrag. Too many blue screens leaves the drive in a mess. If there was a better answer for you I would tell it to you but I think your better off with this company product. It is the real deal for repair. Good Luck.

Damaged USB Port

Ok I think the best method to "Fix" this would be to get your self a 4 - 5 port USB card, they are, real cheap, insert it into a spare slot, inside your PC, and install the drivers, if any, and use that one. And simply ignore the other one all together.

The hitachi 500gb usb 2.0 external hard drive. This drive will not show up on any computer that I plug it into. When i turn it on the red light comes on, but no green. my computer crashed and...

Assuming that you have installed a fresh windows installation after crash, you might not installed the usb drivers.

to make sure that the usb drivers are installed and correct drivers go to controlpanel->system->device manager.
and check in that no yellow icons are present in the usb.

you said that the red light is on. that is power indicator and no data transfer.

green light indicates power and data transfer is on.

check your drivers and try to update or reinstall if the drivers are already present.
CAUTION: before reinstalling or updating see that you uninstall the previous drivers.

If you have more than 1 usb socket on your computer try one of those... remember itunes/iphone/ipods use usb version 2 and may not work properly if you have the older usb 1 standard on your computer
