My Lacie Petit 320GB external HDD fell off the table accidentally, and now it won't show up when connected to my device while the power light turns on. It also makes a repeating, humming noise while it's powered. There's about 250GB of data on it I really want back, is there a way to do this without spending almost 1000 euro's on a backup service that "might" get my data back?

Right click on My Computer > Manage > Device Manager. Do you see any yellow exclamation points? If so, you have conflicting devices. I'd need some feedback at this point to continue to help you, but if you double-click on the yellow mark, a window will popup. See if you can troubleshoot or rollback some drivers.

SOURCE: external hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!

SOURCE: Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

Does it make any clicking/clunking sounds like any of these?
If yes - it's really bad and there's nothing you could by yourself..
If it sounds normal or doesn't spin up at all then try to remove it from enclosure and connect directly to a PC.

How do i recover data from my old LaCie 320gb External Hard Drive?

You MAY POSSIBLY be able to take the raw hard drive out of the case and connect it directly inside a desktop computer; it may be a standard ATA or SATA drive. If you can do that, transfer all the data to another hard drive (internal or external or network) directly.

Drive is not ready to be read ?Error Check/device/harddisk1/DR7 ?

if you external hdd do not show on other computers, usually it meant that power supply on these casings die... but in this particular case it is possible that power supplied by usb port is insufficient to support data transfer. connect recommended power supply (on the back of this particular model you have usb plug and power plug, power supply is/was sold separately) usually hdd inside is still fine and retain data.

if this did not solve your problem, i would suggest purchase little powered universal hdd craddle, they cost about $15 to $25, remove, hdd from casing and connect to the craddle. data should be then accessible directly from your usb port.

as long as hdd is turning, data is accessible and recoverable, even if disk was wiped off.

Lacie Rugged external hard drive - new country, no connectivity

The click comes from the reading head of the hdd, the beep comes from the pc when encounters an error. If the power source of the hdd hasn't been specifically designed to support both voltages, when you plugged it in for the first time it fried. It and all the data on it are gone.

I have a LaCie 320GB hard drive that accidentally fell off my computer tower. The tower itself is on the floor, so it only fell about 20 inches at most, but when it fell, it was in the middle of...

The only thing I can think of to try is to actually remove the drive from the enclosure and connect to the computer internally. Of course that will void the warranty, but if you are technical enough to do that, it may work inside the computer.

In other words, the problem may not be with the drive, but instead with the enclosure.

Although I would guess the drive is shot, as it was writing to the disk when it was dropped.

Sorry for the bad news...

Is my LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB fried/dead???

You're not missing any step at all, because with SATA hard drive if its really working your computer should
automatically detect it and since this hard drive suddenly stop working there's a possibility that its already
fried but if you want you can try this hard drive again to a different computer and if still not detected by
second computer its already dead.........
