Question about Minka F8161BN Ceiling Fan

1 Answer

F 816-1-BN On rotation, forward or reverse, there is a cyclic noise that sounds like something is rubbing. It is not a knock and is not loud, but annoying. The fan is out of waranty, but has been used very little. Does FixYa sell a service manual for this model?

I am not at the place where the fan is located (condo). I like that you have given me several options and will try them on my next trip. I also contacted Minka and was able to get a manual on the fan. Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions.

Hi robertbertol,

You may contact Minka directly so you can request for a service manual to be sent out to you through email. Their phone number is 1 (951) 735-9220 from 6:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. PT. They also have email address: sales@minkagroup.net.

You may also want to try some basic troubleshooting below that might help you address the issue about the noise from your ceiling fan:

If it's a mechanical sound, chances are it is a mechanical problem. It could be something as simple as a wire that has slipped into the path of some moving parts.

1. First, check if your fan wobbles. Balancing the fan may silence the noise. Theremight be some loose part hitting a metal housing piece.

2. Next, check the blades. Can you see anything coming into the path of the blades or any moving part. Remove the blades then, run the fan motor. If the nosie does not persist, something coming into contact with the blades.

3. You may also want to take a look on the motor.Open up the motor housing and rotate the motor slowly by hand. Observe where in it's path of rotation and at which point the noise occurs. Look also for any objects coming into contact with the rotor.

4. Observe also if the motor rotate smoothly. Dry bearings can also make a rubbing sound.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Rear driver wheel has light reubbing noise when car in motion goes away when brakes are engaged. Is this brakes or barrings problem? Cost of repair?

hi this sounds like your brake pads have worn, or the brake shoes as well, if you have drum brakes on the back it will be shoes, if disk brakes will be pads+shoes (inside the disk) if it was the wheel bearing you would hear a loud humming noise not rubbing noise, is it a metallic rubbing noise or a rubber squeaking rubbing noise? just check condition of tyre on back if it is the squeaking rubber noise cost will depend on where you take it and if you do it yourself, possibly $40 to $50 at a garage/auto shop or possibly $20 to $30 if you do it yourself, this just depends ...hope this helps

usually the knocking is the drive bearings, or, the shock absorbers...so , i would check the shockers, if your wheels are rotating normally

Loud Noise

This sounds like something is caught in the brush roller. It is not uncommon for something like a pin, or nail or something of that nature to get caught in the roller chamber and when the roller spins, it will rub on the roller producing that sound. Sort of like putting a playing card in the spokes of your bike when you were a kid. Take the bottom plate off and remove the roller. Inspect the area around the roller for any foreign objects. While your there, check the belt for wear and tension and also check the roller bearings for any material that would interfere with it's smooth rotation. You should also check the hose intake for blockage.
