Question about Danby DMW1146SS Microwave Oven

Open Question

Hello, our danby microwave keeps shorting the circuit after a minute of use. There is silver paper like cover covering the magnetron(microwave tube). I removed the cover and it worked fine. Are we suppose to remove that cover or is it supposed to be there? Thank

What does the service center have to say about this?

Or did you do it yourself?

I eventually just gave up and cut off a piece of one of my extensions. Not sure if there's a better method, but that worked just fine for me. Plus, I still have the other, full sized one for when I want to move the AC to the patio door.

There are a ton of screws to remove...

You'll need to pull it from the wall, and it's easier if you still have the installation instructions.

If not, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

I recommend two people to pull it down due to the weight and awkwardness.

Next remove the outer cover, then you'll see the various screws you'll need to remove to get it out.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Replace a magnetron tube

Magnetrons cannot be 'repaired,' only replaced. While the cost of them has decreased by about 75% over the last couple of decades, the parts you receive are often inferior to the original and will show this only after installed and operating and then the time required for different tasks may be much longer.  Unless there is something unique about the unit, I advise replacing it.

SOURCE: magnetron tube and mica waveguide cover

Unfortunatey unless the unit is a high end oven by the time you pay for the parts and labor you could probably get a new one. Don't forget if you have to replace these parts already who knows what else is about to happen. I hope this helps you out.

Safe yes, but not advisable. That is a mica cover that allows the microwaves out, but prevents steam entering the magnetron. Have it replaced.

It will get hot in a very short period of time. Could you have set the time for a few seconds instead of a few minutes? Thermal issues normally take the unit out until replaced. They are one shot thermal protect devices.

Danby DMW111KPSSDD just quit working -no power

Make sure that the program controller is working if not check power - step down supply, the pads are responding- if not faulty pads- or the door switches, if the switch contact are not good then it will not trigger the processor to switch on the waveguides. If the lights or fan work without any display or action of program being triggered to start then it can be a possible fault on the main board or the processor. Sometimes insect secretion can short the board and display panel and so the processor can work in such an erratic manner. If so clean, solder and reset the board. Now identify the parts by clicking this link: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/microwave/a/5/141/identifying-microwave-parts.html

If there is no heating please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible that the Magnetron is faulty, the temperature cut off is faulty or the main capacitor is short. It is also quite possible that insect can get into the oven and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron. Check this link to know how a microwave works:

http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/microwave/a/5/1443/how-a-microwave-oven-works.html

So Remove cover after disconnecting , check for dirt/moisture in the cabin, if so wipe clean and dry, check the magnetron and area clean and use an jet air to clean off. Check the wave guide covers, if food had deposited
then it must be checked or replaced. See link:
http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/microwave/a/5/1146/how-to-replace-a-microwave-guide-cover.html

Now keeping clear of the microwave, switch on; use a cup of water inside to test.
If you notice any sparks shut off as the magnetron or the main HT capacitor can be faulty. replace with same type.
If there is heating without any issues, you can use the microwave safely

My GE microwave (model# JNM1541DN1BB) is giving me a message; service may be needed keypad shortage. Question 1 how can I fix it myself? Question 2 why did my microwave go out and how can I keep it from...

HELLO.

The GE problem is with the magnetron being to close to the computer. If your microwave runs for a few seconds to minutes then resets with funny characters on the screen, you can follow these simple instructions to fix it.

needed things.

* Phillips screwdriver
* Foil
* Large ziplock baggie
* Tape

* 1 Unscrew the 2 screws in the top vent grill and remove it.

* 2 Unscrew the 1 screw above the computer keypad, then slide it up to unlock it and it will hinge down, revealing the computer circuit board behind the keypad.

* 3 Put a sheet of foil into the large ziplock bag and seal it up.

* 4 Then tape it to cover the whole circuit board in the back of the computer. You may have to let the wires stick out of the middle of your foil covering. The ziplock is to keep the metal foil from short circuiting anything on the computer, and the foil protects the circuit board from the small amount of leaking microwaves inside.

* 5 Lock the keypad back up and plugin the microwave to test it before screwing everything back together.

the way to keep it from happening again is to use the microwave with more caution.

Willing to help to help on other problems.

Thanks.

Cardboard cover is broken in the microwave>

The cover is the waveguide cover and must be replaced to keep the magnetron free from steam and food particles. Your local microwave repair shop can do it quite easily or you may be able to buy a mica cover online.

I have Danby microwave, the food does not heat and there is smells like some thing is burnt. I have opened it and the high voltage transformer does not look burnt.

What is happening is that the magnetron is shorted, causing the high voltage transformer to overheat. That is what you are smelling is the insulation getting hot. When the magnetron shorts out, it makes a loud buzzing sound. Replacement magnetrons costs almost as much as a new oven so it rarely makes sense to fix.

My danby microwave model dmw748ss the screen has like a 4 sign and will not do anything cannot punch in any numbers or nothing just won't work

The customer control pad can be faulty. So this must be confirmed with a test using a multimeter in the connections to the main board. If microwave is not worrking at all and there is no action please do not switch on unless you have confirmed the fault. It is possible that the Magnetron is faulty, the temperature cut off is faulty or the main capacitor is short. It is also quite possible that insect can get into the oven and create soft spots. When you switch on these will create a short and make the voltage jump and in the long run damage the magnetron.

Make sure that the program controller is working if not check power - step down supply, the pads are responding- if not faulty pads- or the door switches, if contact is not through the microwave will not work.

Now keeping clear of the microwave, switch on, use a cup of water inside to test.
If you notice any sparks shut off as the magnetron or the main HT capacitor can be faulty. replace with same type.
If there is heating without any issues, you can use the microwave safely

Everything else on the microwave is working fine, just not heating the food.

Cardboard insert

It sounds like you may be talking about the wavegudie cover. Does it cover a square hole in the side or top of the caivty? If so, it is needed. It prevents grease and food debris from getting in the waveguide, which can damage the magnetron. I would refer you to Danby customer service: http://www.danby.com/page.asp?code=5
