particulary if you notice when the grass cutting load comes on the blades seem to slow down then speed up -and sounds like its squealing ? it indicates belt slip

Is there a belt that drives the self propelled that could be broken? pushes very hard

Sally, yes there is a belt that drives the wheels. be sure the cable is working from the handle to the deck where it attaches. if it is working properly it should make the belt tight and loose. if the belt has come off or is wore out you can take off the access plate under the mower and replace it.

Why does the deck belt on my Craftsman rider SN 917.276863 come off. I purchesed an undersized belt and it comes off. Purchased a OE belt and it comes off.

be sure you dont have a pulley that is bent or loose. are the belt retainers still in place? the deck bearings are not wore out causing a vibration?

Mower wont cut going up hill

there should be two drive belts. they should be replaced both at the same time. if one is wore so is the other one. use the correct belt, from a lawn mower parts store.

Cutting Blades going too slow

if it is an older mower or has a lot of hours on it it is possible that the deck belts have stretched or wore out. if it runs fine in short grass but slows down in taller grass that is a sign of a wore belt. replace and it should be good. also be sure your blades are sharp. that will have a effect on its cutting capability.

Mower only barely moves in forward or reverse

first is it HYDRO or belt driven?
hydro fluid is low old or wore out, or belt slipping
belt drive belts stretched, oil on them, tension spring off,
or belts just worn out

What would cause my mower deck to squeal loudly

Lots of things. Is belt loose? Wrong belt? Bad idler pulley? Bearing? Some decks have a brake pad that contacts against a pulley to stop blades when they are disengaged. May be out of adjustment. Just have to check and locate bad part or a rubbing condition. Is deck installed properly? Good luck in your search. You will find it! I would look for a belt problem. Loose, wore out, or installed wrong.

Craftsman LT2000 Does not move (wheels do not move). blade engages and works finr

I would lower the deck to the lowes setting and look between the frame and the deck toward rear wheels and check the drive belt it sounds like it is slipping or busted.

The drive belt on my 757 ztrac mower keeps coming off. I have replaced the bearings in the idler pulley, but the belt continues to come off.

Check to see if the idler arm at rear of machine where belt comes off PTO is bent or bushings wore out.Ask your dealer if there is any guides you can install around spindle pulleys.

Well, most riding mowers have a "pully idler", meaning once you have the belt on there (and it is the RIGHT size), the idler automatically gives the belt tension when you engage it (in fact, the idler pully is what IS engaged when you engage the belly mower).

Couple things to check (super simple):

The Belt. Look to see if she is wore smooth out.
Sometimes....they WILL stretch on you, instead of busting/coming apart, and give you noise (when she is engaged, but wore out enough to flop around a little)

The Deck Blade Bearings. Straight away, that is what it sounds like, or bent blades.

Check your Blade Bearings (super simple):
1. Pick up your deck to the highest high setting (mower off, just sitting).
2. Reach under, and grab your mower blade (do this for both sides), and TILT your blade UP (meaning, don't LIFT the blade straight up).
Seriously, jiggle it at a TILT. If you feel some slack in the bearing, the bearing IS shot. Straight up and down is most of the time OK, IF it is VERY little play on your blade bearings. As you do it, look at your belt pulley directly on top, if you see that pully bobbing....

However, if you grab one side of the blade only, then tilt the blade up, and she moves.....
Bearings need replaced, both the upper AND lower bearings PER blade.

They are not hard to replace, and not expensive either! (Though unfortunately, most are "sealed" junk nowadays!)

Bad Bearings show up (make themselves known) in only a few ways: Tons of Noise (grinding, squealing) & Vibration.

Go check them thar Bearings!
