I have a 16 GB verbatim brand jump drive that I cannot open up. I have tried other usb ports on different computers. Is it common for jump drives to go bad? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

If not "safely removed" USB drives can go bad. If your system recognizes the drive when plugged in you can try doing a scan disk on it and check for any errors that may be preventing you from accessing the file system.

Plug in the USB drive, check my computer and see if the drive is there, if it is, right click the drive, click properties, and tools and select the option to scan the disk.

If you do not see the drive in My Computer, click start, Run, type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK. Check and see if your drive is being recognized in Disk Management.

If you still do not see it in Disk Management, they you may just have a faulty jump drive, at which point you should contact Verbatim to see if they have any other recommendations or if it is still under warranty.

How do i download memory from 1 memory stick 2 another?

I'll presume you are referring to a 1 gb flash drive.
You can plug both flash drives into USB ports and just "drag and drop" from one to another.
If you have only 1 USB port available plug in the drive with the data. Create a folder on your desktop (Righ click on desktop, select NEW, Folder) and give it a name like "Flash backup"
Open the flash drive and highlight all the files and copy or move them to the newly created folder. Remove the flash drive and insert the drive you want to copy the data to and again highlight the data in the folder and copy it to the new flash drive

What is the best way to transfer data from my old computer to this one?

The most popular way to transfer files is to burn them to a cd. For this you would need a cd burner and a couple of blank cds. Not only are you moving the files but by burning them to a cd, you are also archiving them. You'll be thankful that you did when something goes wrong with your computer. If you have a cd burner that is compatible with cd-rw media, then you would be able to just use one cd to transfer. A cd-rw disk offers the option to erase the cd and then rewrite something else to it. Depending on the speed of your cd burner, this could be a quick or a timely process. It may be very repetitive if you have a lot of data to transfer An excellent way to transfer a couple of files from computer to computer is to transfer with a thumb drive. A thumb drive is a small hard drive that can hold anywhere between 16mb to 1 full gig. It is normally a plug and play device that you would plug into a USB port. It would show up as a removable drive in My Computer on Windows or if you a Mac user, it would show up on your desktop. If you have an older computer, you may have to install drivers for your USB ports or software for the device to be recognized. Please check your thumb drive manual for more information on the setup for different systems. If you're not afraid to open the computer up, you could just take your old hard drive and hook it up as a secondary or slave drive. This would allow you to transfer the files from hard drive to hard drive, within your computer. Before doing anything to your computer, please consult your computer manual
or an experienced computer professional . Never open your computer up while it is still plugged in.

Is it possible to search for a specific file that was saved on my toshiba canvio hard drive?

Use this USB Y-Cable.f014c47.jpg It provides the extra power you need for your external Hard Disk Drive or other USB devices when a standard USB cable is not able to transfer enough power to operate your device. Simply plug the mini-B cable into your USB A ends into open USB ports on your PC. The cable draws power from both USB ports and increases the output to the external Hard Drive or USB device.
Clue of step are listed below: 8376d83.jpg

ACER Veriton 5600GT how to turn off USB power after shutdown

Not likely.
What you have is power over USB which is good because it allows the hard drive to get enough power to run without a seperate power cord. This is also usefull for IPODS and other media that Charge through a USB. It means you can turn your computer off and still charge something.

If its an external hard drive, its meant to be removed. You can right click and disconnect it from the bottom right and then remove it safely.

You may have a port that doesnt provide power when turned off, maybe a front USB port, you could plug it in there.

There most likely isnt a way to change any jumpers unless your system board instructions specify that you can and how to. Dont go tinkering around because if you put jumpers on the wrong spot, you can blow some of the small components on the board.

This would render the USB completely useless.

If you want a permanent extar HDD for back up, just get a new IDE for the internal, There cheep these days. you can get a 250 gig IDE for under $60.00

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.
