Question about MotorGuide STANDARD MOTOR REPLACEMENT PARTS SWITCHES AND COMPONENTSDescript

1 Answer

I have a Great White Motor Guide Trolling motor, 82 lb. thrust, 24 volt. I take it out for about 15 minutes and then it shuts off. A few mimutes later, it comes back on at a slower pace, but then shuts off again after a few more minutes. This continues for hours, off and on. It was rebuilt last season by the factory do to some defect and is now in the repair shop but no one can find out the problem.

I called Mercury, who makes the MotorGuide, and they said this motor has no such item as a speed controller output device.

I would almost guarantee that this problem is caused by overheating speed controller output devices, I would think that they need replacement. (Replace entire main board really)
Try and replace the speed controller and I think this will resolve the problem.. I have seen these problems before.

running to slow indicates voltage too low
you will have 3 X 12 volt batteries connected in series ( positive to negative to positive to negative with positive to motor The first battery negative connected to the ground on the motor
the multicore wire cable is for 12 volt draws as in fish finder, light etc and can be connected across any single battery terminals
They could also be for a foot controlled pedal that is forward and reverse operation
that will be explained in the user manual

Yes but not for long. You need to buy a deep cycle battery. Regards Phil.

I have a Motor Guide Brute 767, 67 lb thrust 24 volt trolling motor. It will only run at about half speed even with new batteries.

I believe you may have a bad low voltage circuit board problem. I do not think they make the board any longer but you may be able to convert it to work by bypassing the circuit board. I am working on one now.

Here is a picture of the wire connection for 24 volt. Compare to yours is it correct? If it is, I wish you listed make and model I could of sent you the right picture diagram of you motor. Use this picture as a starting point. Test the wires through the motor testing for 24 volts. Again if I knew make and model I could show you exactly were. Last if voltage is correct all the way through. The motor is the last thing to tear down. If the brushes or armeture is damaged in anyway, or manufactured wrong, it would lead to power loss.

I have a great white 67 lb thrust trolling motor . I can run it at 1/2 to 3/4 power and it will run for a while but when you go to full power it will shut off and you have wait a while before it kicks back...

Sounds like it's heating up. Check your wire size. For 24 volt: 6 guage wire is reccommended - that's pretty heavy. Also check the wiring of your batteries. It's easy to get mixed up if you have 24 or 36 volt system. One more thing...check the fuse size to make sure that is correct. Hope this helps. Brian
