Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Light is intermittent and it seems like an electrical short is occurring that interrupts the process. Seems to complete the cooking cycle but looks and sounds like it is about gone.

This is a built in unit. The motor sounds really labored and like it is not getting electricity. The light is really bad now and much lower in brightness.

Hi,

Press the "Off/Clear' button to cancel anything on the display, and reset the microwave. This is a soft reset and will simply get you out of any program you have started. Press it when the cooking complete reminder appears on the display.
Perform a hard reset. Pull the plug out of the wall power supply, and wait a moment. Plug the microwave back into the wall power supply to reset any anomalies with the microwave's memory. You will need to reset the time of day if you perform a hard reset.
Reset the time of day. Press the "Clock" button, and turn the dial to set the hours. Press the dial to enter. Follow the same procedure for the minutes and a.m. or p.m. Press the "Start" button to start the clock. This should help fix the problem.

Sounds like stuck relay contacts. Magnetrons need a high voltage source which is controlled by a micro to relay and then from relay to voltage source. Even the turntable works via a relay.

My GE spacemaker microwave won't heat. Everything else seems to work. Model JVM1851BH06

Does the magnetron come on when you hit your settings to cook/warm/etc? You'll know that unmistakeable sound of a whirring/blowing fan and a "hum". Plus when the magnetron cycles on and off, you'll notice the light inside the microwave dim and get brighter in accordance with the cycling.
IF the magnetron's not coming on then you're looking at servicing it. If you're electrically inclined, there's a relay and a really big diode that is in the circuit with the magnetron. A meter will tell you if the diode's open (if you can get to it - sometimes manufacturers will epoxy over the connections to keep you out and make you gop to them for service).

My NN-S254 Microwave comes on intermittently, mostly dead

Try cleaning (pull the power cord plug first) the inner side of the sheet metal waveguide which may have a layer of grease that could short out the microwaves. This waveguide runs from the magnetron base over to the cooking cavity and usually can be removed by undoing some sheet metal screws along it's length. There is a fan-like device called a 'stirrer' that is located near the cavity opening under the wave guide and it should be cleaned also along with the cavity entry window. Hope this helps!

Microwave cuts off after heating for about 3-4 minutes

There is a overtemperature device inside that is shuting you down until things cool off. Take the cover off and clean up everything as much as possible. Grease from the cooking can get all over everything inside and collect dust buildup enough to obstruct the airflow and cause overheting.

Vibrating noise when cooking

In order to try to set your mind at ease I will have to explain the Basics on how a Microwave Oven Functions.
When a Microwave Oven is set to COOK ...START. It cooks at 100%. There is no lowering of the heat as with a Range ( Cook Top) Control. So in order to do the other things such as DEFROST, WARM, or anything other than 100% COOK. A COOK ON- COOK OFF system was utilized. To DEFROST, the Microve COOKS at 100% for 30% of the TIME, then IDLES for 70% of the TIME. COOK ON 30% of the TIME, COOK OFF 70% of the TIME = DEFROST This is why you can hear the CYCLE. More power is required during the ON CYCLE, thus the lower vibration. The Vibration occurs when the High Voltage Transformer is turned ON ( COOK ON).
The VIBRATION seems to have got louder with age. This is somewhat normal as there is a vibration from the High Voltage Transformer present every time the Microwave is used. screws and other metal parts seem to get loose with this vibration. There is no solution, unless you can tighten EVERY screw, nut, and bolt in the unit.
Sorry!

Fan does not activate when cooking

The problem may be on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This often can affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on.
