Question about Cycling

1 Answer

After finding that my son's rear wheel wasn't turning as he peddled hi mongoose, we took it to a repair shop. The man in the shop wants to charge us forty five pounds for a new bearing and driver. The price had gone from ten pounds to forty five and took two weeks to do it. The bike is a year old and had been sat in the shed for a couple of months. Does this sound right or are we being ripped off? Thanks in advance for any advice

Price comparable wheels online. It may have been cheaper to just buy a new one.

That clicking is not caused by the chain. Some of the new freewheels are made to be silent. If he wants that sound he'll have to change the freewheel.

Bike Doesn't Peddle Right

i would suggest any bike shop can help you but if you have to have same ones go to craigslist, you may not find them because they aren't a high end product. i may be wrong i' haven't seen anything but complete bikes being sold by that company, actually they don't even make the rims its a components company like shamonno. If you want something close go online to dans comp, its a retailer you can get great deals from, i just like going to bike shop and seeing them, paying and bringing them home. don't forget that they may have a used set for sell, most bike shops would not be selling a used set unless they new they were in good condition.

I am wondering where I can order a back wheel for the mongoose 20 inch outer limit boys bike. Accidently got run over and is very bent. Thank you deb

Any Mongoose dealer or bicycle shop should be able to handle that or just web search for a 20" BMX wheel. It doesn't appear to be unique.

We bought a Mongoose SR Suntour M2000N (21-speed) at a local sports store and had trouble with all of the gears shifting. We took the bike back & the store said they retrieved a new bike from another...

Sports Store? Do they also sell fishing tackle, skis and appliances? Take it back and buy a real bike at a real Bicycle Shop.

It will be fully functional and fitted to your son before you take it home and in a month or so they'll probably re-tune the shifting and everything for free.

If you can't find a nearby bicycle shop easily

try the local cycling community...
They'll know where the good shops are.

I was rideing when all of a sudden I heard a POP sound and my peddles wouldn't peddle any more! peddles free wheel like the chain is off but it is not!......when I spin the Back wheel forward,...

Possibly. The pawls probably exploded. Not knowing what type of rear wheel/hub you have it's impossible to say but a Bike Shop would spot the cause in a heartbeat. The repair may involve something as simple as a spritz of lube in the right places to a complete new rear wheel (as hub replacement involves a lot of labor rebuilding the wheel and may not make economical sense).

Take it to a shop for a look-see.

Quick releases skewers will hold the wheel just fine if tightened properly. They're SUPPOSED TO dig into the paint.

Deralleur and brake cables will stretch or break-in with initial use and always require some tweaking early on. Some shops build that expected tune-up into their sales offering.

Any good bicycle repair shop should stock a variety of wheels. Ask the staff and tell them what kind of riding your son does or better yet, take him along with you. A fun project if you can afford it is to build your own. Here is links to sites with good info: and Hope this helps.

I think I can help. Place one end of the chain over the rear gear (doesn't matter which one, the biggest) and adjust the lever or twist ring on the handlebar so the derailleur lines up in a straight line with it. Pull the chain from the rear sprocket down and over the pivot wheel and back over the bottom wheel so it looks just like this S and the end comes forward. Join the chain links. Place the chain over a couple front teeth and turn the pedal carefully until the chain seats on the front sprocket.
