Welcome to FixYa.

The reason why you are having an error message "memory card cannot be used" is you are having problem in accesing the memory card.
There are two option to solve that issue.First You have to check if the card is compatible or it is the right memory card for your camera. And since that you've used it for a year lets move on the second solution. Grab a soft and dry cloth and try to clean the connectors. Sometimes using an eraser to clean the memory card itself may help. however you have to be careful in using it. do not rub it too much.

If you need for details and troubleshooting on your camera, I have a manual here that you can use. Just click on this link. I hope this will be usedful for you.

Thank you for using FixYa.

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO A COMPUTER
If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos and to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

How to recover deleted photos from pentax optio w20 camera

If the photos are on a memory card and you haven't done anything to the card since erasing the photos, there's a change you may be able to recover at least some of them. Do a Google search for "data recovery software" and find a program for your computer and operating system. Put the card into a card reader connected to your computer and run the program.

Vikram, first of all take no more pictures with the memory card. You'll need to use recovery software to recover your photos. There are very many freeware options for your to choose (here's a short listing with reviews). You'll need to use your computer's card reader with this software. Now AFTER you've recovered your photo's, you'll need to initialize (format) the card in your camera (DON'T use your computer to initialize the card). This will erase the card, but it will also help prevent this instance from reoccurring. Look in your camera's menus for the format option.

A person accidently deleted four years of photos from my camera. Is there any way to retrieve them?

Yes there is. Take no more pics until you've recovered your photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that may help you recover your photos. This article reviews and outlines several of the better ones:
