Hi, My Samsung 500gb HD is bad & I am replacing it with the same HD. I installed the new HD & booted up. All I get is a blue screen with a large cursor arrow. No prompts, instructions etc. How do I proceed to install / format the new HD?? I also plan on installing Windows 7 as the OS. Thanx. MH

Hello amstyl, I have one question please. I have Windows Home Premium 64bit . It is an OEM system builders version & not the retail version. Can it be installed as easily as the retail 64bit version? I read that I need to use an OEM preinstallation kit (OPK). I am a little confused. Any advice ? Thanx. Regards, MH

Hi kammhron,

Yes it can be installed as easily as the retail 64bit version. OPK is intended for quick and easy deployment of Windows by System Builders who are selling computers to customers and want to add specific branding and identity to their computers.

In your case, its not necessary, just proceed with the installation from the Windows DVD.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

hi
yes it may be related to bios setting . Just enter your bios in the laptop (F2)
and for HD change the SATA to ATA or vice-versa. SAVE and retry boot.

(it can also be AHCI to ATA or ATA to AHCI.)

I would suggest that you disconnect anything you dont need to start the pc, speakers etc

DISCONNECT ANY HARD DRIVES THAT ARE NOT NEEDED TO BOOT THE PC

Try this and see what result you get .

Unexpected hardware is a common issue.

Hi, you need to change your primary boot device, try pressing the F1 key during bootup, this will take you to the BIOS screen, from here you can change your primary boot device from HD to CD, save your changes, reboot, selecting boot from CD when it appears during bootup.
Hope this helps

I reciently installed a bigger HD and now I get the"blue screen from hell"!! How can I get it to boot on the new HD?,Ray

did you format the hard drive first?
typically you need to format the hard drive using the NTFS file system before you install your operating system.

does your bios recognize the hard drive?
make sure your bios detects the hard drive.

can you boot your computer in Safe Mode? If so, do that and use your error log to find the specific cause of the blue screen,

lastly post the blue screen error message on here to get a better answer.

Hard Drive Prevents any other windows device from loading

Hi, Mark Here.
Yes the setup on the xp install puts drivers into memory, but being an older version of windows B4 sta was out it does not have drivers to support it.

You could go to Microsoft & search for a new version of setup install drivers that includes sta, & download to thumb.
Really typical Windows Failure (driver not available freeze up or blue screen).

Vista doesn't generally like to be installed on a hard drive that big. Well, Windows, in general doesn't.

And, from the sounds of it, you didn't install Windows on your new primary 1.5TB drive, you just copied it from the 500GB drive, which won't work.

Here's what you should to, to solve this:
1) Swap out your 1.5TB drive with the 500GB drive again.
2) Swap out your secondard 1.5TB drive, with the new one.
3) Create a partition of 120GB or less on that drive
4) Install Windows on the new partition.
5) Put the other 1.5TB drive back in, as secondary.

Once that's done, you can swap out the new 1.5TB drive with your Windows partition on it, in place of the 500GB drive.

When you boot, Windows may ask you to select which operating system you want, just select Windows Vista, and you should be good to go.

I had a similar issue a few years ago, when I tried to install Windows on a 1TB drive, and couldn't get it to work. Once I partitioned a smaller space, it worked like magic.
