Question about Electrolux UltraLux 2000 Bagged Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

The bristles on the floor attachment are starting to splay. I can see the flat, metal piece that holds them in beginning to pop up. I tried to hammer it back in, and it starts to bend. Is it okay to unscrew the screws on the bottom of the brush to try to fix it further, or will I lose all of the bristles?

My Shark Navigator works very well, great suction. However, it is very hard to push on carpet. Can this be adjusted?

Two things make carpet vacing easier. First is the floor piece. It should be a smooth slight rounded shaped piece with just a small line of bristles or none at all. Second is mostly for area rugs is to open the suction vent usually located near the handle. That allows some air in which takes suction away from the floor piece allowing it to slide on the rug rather than drag it around.

Posibilities are streteched belt, suction leak or blockage. Check if there is suction at the end of the hose. Next check the hose from the rug nozzle is clear. If you can hold the brush roll by pushing against the bristles with a flat object change the belt.

Change cord on kirby g4

The cord simply unplugs from the cleaner, but you first have to remove the cover that holds the plug into the lower motor shell. There should be one screw holding the cover in place. Remove the screw and then push against the rear of the cover to unlatch it. You will also need to remove the trim piece around the switch. Remove the center screw in the rear, and the screw on top holding the fitting on the cord. Insert a small flat screwdriver into the small rectangular opening in the trim piece and pry up to pop it off. Reverse the proceedure to attach the new cord.

I have a Harmony vacuum and need it only for bare floors. The attachment I have seems to be too rough on the floors. I just need a simple attachment with soft bristles for a bare floor that will fit this...

Take the lower portion of your wand to a vac shop and ask for a universal fit wide floor brush with NATURAL bristle. The soft bristle is much better quality and will clean deeper into grooves in your wood floor or and tiled area.

How are the two top sections held together? I need to get at the wiring.

I have the Bissell Big Green model 1672 and have used it for many years. Recently, the fan or suction blower began to emit a burnt smell so I shut it off. I had difficulty figuring out how to dissemble the top motor unit. Here is what I found.

Don't pry up on the very top disk, which is an air outlet. It will only break off and won't allow access to anything. If you do break it off, drill holes through the four posts and use stainless steel screws to re-attach the disk to the plastic posts it sits on.

Now, beneath the air outlet is the rest of the motor unit. The motor unit consists of three pieces. The bottom piece is the lid to the waste water receptacle. It is concave pointing down (lid shaped). The top piece is the domed lid for the motor unit. The middle piece is a flat plate between the other two pieces. The top of the flat plate (inside the unit) has mountings for the suction fan and the pump.

The flat plate is bolted to the bottom piece and the top piece (domed lid) is simply snapped down to the flat plate. If you take a flashlight and look inside the area where the AC cord is stored, you can see that the domed lid is a distinct piece from the flat plate. The model 1672 and 1680 (or 1680-3 if you wish) are nearly identilcal.

To access the internal parts in the motor unit, you cannot pry between bottom piece and the the flat plate because they are bolted together. But you can remove the top domed lid. To remove the domed lid, position the motor unit in front of you with the switches at 9 o-clock. Three snap-downs which attach the domed lid to the flat plate are at 1 o'clock, 2:30, and 7 o'clock. Wedge a flat bladed screwdriver or pocketknife between the edge of the domed lid and the flat plate at those locations and the lever the domed lid out and then up. The domed lid will separate from the bolted-together flat plate and bottom piece.

Wiring from the switches remain attached to to the electrical components. You will see that the AC cord has white, black, and green wires. The green ground wire connects to the fan ground at the 9 o'clock position. The white power connects to upper connector on the pump and also to the fan at the 7:30 position. Black feeds both switches on model 1672 and then a black wire runs from the correct switch to the bottom connector on the pump or to the connector on the fan at the 1:30 position.

Model 1680 has a third switch which feeds power to the floor sweeper. It has its own connection to the green ground and white power and goes through the third switch to connect to black.

If you need to replace the pump or the fan, shop around carefully. The pump, for example, can be found for $30 plus shipping, but some will want to charge you $80.

I have a Lux Floor Pro Heavy Duty carpet cleaner. Whis attachments (scrubbers) do I attach to the bottom to wash a non-plush carpet. I have three attachments that have hard bristles and three that have...

NEVER USE THE HARD BRUSHES ON CARPET ! You can burn up your motor, break the drive belt,or strip the drive gears The black bristle brushes are for all carpet types.
The hard bristle brushes are made for hardwood and other smooth surfaces.

Kenmore PowerMate cannister: Reattach cannister floor piece.

You need to open the head by gently squeezing the light cover housing and lifting it off. There will be two screws underneath and once removed the lid will lift off and reveal the area where the pedal installs.

Just purchased a used unit.

1. Did I get a good price? - YES
2. What would be considered "regular" maintenance on these units?
Replace belts every 1-1.5 years (they stretch over time), make sure brush roll bristles are not worn and stick out of the nozzle by about 1/8 of the inch (more info here). If bags starts stinking - wash it (more info HERE). Keep it clean and store unit with the nozzle raised off the floor (so bristles would not bend)
Other than that - nothing else is really important.

3. Are there any "Normal Problems" that I should be aware of?
If it makes strange crackling sound when you push it while it is OFF and in NEUTRAL - it may need new bracket cam (instructions HERE). Be careful - do not DROP it on the floor. Original G4 nozzle hooks (that hold nozzle to the unit) are britle and may break. STOP using it if it starts to work LOUD ( fan probably is broken)

4. Any advice for a new used Kerby G4 owner?
Go through the manual - ESPECIALLY section where brush roll installation is explained. We have some good pictures that you may find a bit better than in the OEM manual HERE.

Enjoy,
Rocky

DCo7 too much suction hard to push

This suggests that the bristles on your brush roller are worn out.  When the bristles are a good working length, rotation of the roller actually helps to pull the machine over the carpet. When the bristles wear down this effect is lost.

Smells of burning

You may either have something caught up in the under part of the vacuum or the belt may be broken or partially broken causing it to smell like that. Try laying the vacuum flat on its back and plugging it up. Then turn it on and see if the brushes spin and if they do not, then you will need a new belt which is not expensive. Then check the bristles and the thing that holds up the bristles to see it there are any strings caught in them causing it to smell of burning. Take the strings out and then try it. It should stop smelling of burning.
