Question about Pentair Fns Plus 48 sqft De Pool Filter (In Ground Pool)

2 Answers

Our fns plus pool filter works, but it gets air into the system through the outlet spout when the filter goes off. This causes a 30 second routine of air leaving the system each morning when the timer turns the system back on. Should I replace the unit at the top of the dome?

A check valve is a good idea, as back up! Not to fix a symptom due to a problem, that will go unsolved or unprepared. Replace the assembly at the top of the filter.
If you do decide to install a check valve, I presume what Adam is referring to is to put one in front of the pump onto your suction line. If you do do this, ensure you are NOT installing a disc style spring check. These will, especially when installed on a suction side, because of vacuuming debris like leaves, will get clogged and you will end up cutting them out due to very restricted water flow. The disc style spring check can be used on a pressure side, immediately after the pump. Instead, use a Swing Check on the suction side. Now, he swing flap even has a spring assist to keep them closed, when no flow.
When I feel the need to install a check valve on the suction side to eliminate back flow, I use this one...
Valterra 200 CU20 PVC Swing Spring Combination Check Valve Clear 2 Union

  • swing - to eliminate clogging
  • Spring - to assist keeping it closed when no flow
  • 2" - because bigger diameter, more room for debris to pass
  • Unions - if it does clog, unions make easy clean out.

You may either replace the air relief valve, or plumb in a check valve so that the water cant backflow

I am having problem reassembling filter grits, unable to fit smaller grit

If you have the manifold upside down on the ground, the small grid fits into the second hole to the right of the big standpipe hole. That is the reason for the smaller grid, to allow room for the stand pipe.

The FNS PLUS was originally built by American Products under a different name and was absorbed into Pentair's line, recently replacing the PAC-FAB FNS (fiberglass nautilus) also absorbed by Pentair. The two filters have no common background.
The FNS PLUS has been cursed at by more pool techs than I can count. All I can say is practice helps but these are always a pain to get right. Make sure that the narrower of the elements is in the correct spot, the rest do not matter. Also check the manifold on all sides for cracks and make sure the air relief screen is set properly. I wish I had an easy solution for you, but this filter is just a pain, even for the guys that work on them every day.

Got a fns plus 60 filter grids all cleaned replaced bad ones what is the secret to putting it all put together right can't line the the grids on the bottom template so they match help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make sure that the space in the spreader is aligned with the big hole in the manifold, and that the small grid is 2 spaces right of the big hole. I curse like a sailor almost every time I work on these (FNS Plus), even after 18 years in the business. Your local pool shop should be able to do this for you at no charge.

it sounds like your valving for the return water is set wrong. check to make sure that some water will return to the spa when the pool is running. It's a valving problem more than it is a filter problem.
