Question about Mtd Garden

1 Answer

1997 MTD model 672 lawn tractor transaxle issue. During annual over all service, I noticed that while on a jack the rear axles have vertical movement or play of approx. 1/8". My question is: Given the machine age (approx. 14 years) if machine still functions would it be cost effective to repair this type of problem?

How do l remove both rear wheels from a mtd lawnflite mower

depends which model, but undo the 1/2" bolt in the centre of the wheel and slide wheel off axle. However by experience i know that if the axles havent been removed and axles greased regularly then you will have trouble getting them off, You will need to spray wd40 or similar dowm the axles and then jack up rear of machine, get a block of wood and a big hammer and knock the wheel from the inside while sprying wd40 onto the axle every time the wheel moves a bit

Why doesnt my MTD 42" lawn tractor move but it will start?

If the transmission is belt drive, check the belt, worn/oily? If you have a hydrastat tranny, make sure that the bypass plunger is pushed in. Check that the belt goes around the tranny pulley. If still no luck, turn mower off, jack up and support the rear frame, with the real wheels hanging in the air(just an inch or two is plenty) try turning the wheels -1st, with the gear selector in "N". then 2nd, with the gear selector in "D". This should narrow the problem down a bad tranny or a sheared keyway in the axle.

I have a Sears riding mower model #917.255460 that the hydrostat transmission and wheels have locked up. Any thoughts how to fix.

I have answered, this similar question, and have given advice, what i would do. If you are a just a week end doer, i would not attempt to try to make your own repairs. This Hydrostatic Transaxle,is quite a complicated piece,You will need a profession, service technician to work on this. It has so many bearings, gears and a lot of small parts. This sound like,a gear is slipping, when the tractor is put in gear and under a load. It could be as simple as servicing, the Transaxle. I have seen this problem, when the Transaxle had air trapped in it. Your Owner's Manual, explains what to do,if there is air in the transaxle. You have to move the tractor about five in both directions. This usually, takes care of the problem. This occurs, sometimes after servicing the Transaxle. There is something thing you can do,check, for leaks of oil around the axles and or,at the Transaxle it self. It could be low on transmission oil. If this is the case, you will need to replace the seals. Unless, you know what your doing,i wouldn't attempt to dissemble the Transaxle assembly. Instead, call Sears for a repair service or call any lawn mower shop, that does this kind of repair.Sincerely,Brad Locke

How to drain rear end in mtd riding lawn mower

Hi, basically you don't drain them. If its hydrostatic it is sealed for life and non serviceable. If its a transaxle its filled with semi fluid grease and can only be changed while disassembled. This is not necessary as part if normal maintenance. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

Lawn tractor forward movement problem

Check the adjustment from the lever to the transaxle, if the linkage is ok the transaxle may be suffering from age and has leaking internal seals.

Cratsman lt2000 lawn tractor will start but will not move forward or backward. I tried changing the drive belt, but that didn't work.

Is the transaxle pulley turning? If so have you removed the rear wheel recently and possibly lost the square key that fits on the axle?check those two items first. If ok it probably has a broken gear or shift key in transaxle.

How to remove rear wheel of lawn tractor

You should be able to remove the bolt from the center with a 1/2" socket an slide it off the axle. You do not want to do any heavy hammering on the wheel because you could possibly drive the axle out of the transmission. MTD mowers are notorious for being hard to get the rear wheels off. If you do get them off or ever buy a new one, remove the rear wheels and coat the axles with anti-seize compound. Good luck
