Water dispenser frozen?

About a week ago I noticed that the refrigerator was too cold. It is set at 38 degrees F (and it has always been set at this temperature). Vegetables were frozen and when I put some frozen meats in the fridge to defrost they remained frozen. I also noticed small pieces of ice coming out of the water dispenser. We cleaned the coils with the vaccuum per the instruction manual and it seemed to do the trick, but now the water dispenser won't dispense water. I think it froze! We raised the temperature to 43, left the door open a couple of minutes, and some water came out, but it seems like it is still frozen.

the freezer is working fine - it's the refrigerator that is too cold, and the water dispenser is not dispensing water. I haven't checked the ice maker. Water started flowing from the dispenser as soon as we raised the temperature (temp inside the fridge now at 55), but I am afraid that this is a band aid fix.

Thanks - should I be concerned that something else is broken which caused the fridge temp to dip/reservoir to freeze? I am just puzzled that this had never happened before. Plus, I cleaned the coils on Saturday and the water dispenser froze today (Tuesday).

    thank you, much appreciated.

I'll take a stab at helping you.
Most, if not all freezers have a small heater element that keeps the water inlet to that freezer compartment from freezing and if that's defective ( or unplugged ) then any incoming water would freeze before being dispensed or fed into an auto ice maker tray.

The freezer compartment being 'too cold' should not effect water flow if that heater was operational, however it may allow too much cold air to pass into the refridgerator area causing some food to freeze.

It's a good idea to keep the coils clean and dust free as a general rule of thumb but those are used as part of the cooling system to draw heat out of the freezer/fridge area but that doesn't seem to be your problem. Hope my comments help !

You have a resevoir inside the fridge compartment that needs to be defrosted. It is frozen.

It is usually located behind the crisper drawers.

It is a small plastic tank that is white about 6 inches or so in length and bolted on to the wall behind the crispers.

A hair dryer usually does the trick in about 10 mins.

It was the reservoir. I promise!

I have seen this many times before, the cold temp in the fridge that froze your food, also froze the reservoir which makes the water cold before it comes out of the water dispenser.

    Good luck

Now that you have thawed the reservoir, you are in good shape!

Since you have the unit working properly by cleaning the coils, you should not have this problem again!

I think that when you cleaned the coils, the unit became more efficient, and subsequently came down in temp, then the problems associated with that happened.

    I believe you are OK.

The fridge area is staying around 32-33 degrees. the setting is set to 38. the water reservior is frozen so no water.despenses ice maker is ok. What may be the cause

The thermostat contols the run time of the unit.If the unit is running way below the set temp most likely the themostat is bad.Sometimes on old refers, they can lose a small amount of freeon and still get cold. But, not completely enough to trigger the thermostat to shut off.If your refer is less than 7 years old I would suspect the thermostat.

Water dispenser in my Maytag french door refer has suddenly stopped working. We use it every day and the filter seems to be fine. It almost sounds like it is frozen. Please Help!!!

We have a hd2560 (bot 10/04), french door with inside water dispenser and it had stopped working a year ago, but started working a few months later. I couldn't figure out what happened, but suspected the water line was frozen. I later found out that the water reservoir is located behind the fruit and vegetable bins, so look there to see if the water is frozen.

Two weeks ago, our frig/compressor stopped cooling after making humming/clicking sounds for weeks. Fortunately, Maytag has a 5 yr parts & labor warranty on the compressor, so we were covered. Evidently, there are quite a few faulty compressors out there.

I believe that the compressor had been over-cooling in the past and caused the water lines/tank to freeze. This would also cause frozen produce/fruit. I would immediately contact Maytag/Whirlpool if you suspect a faulty compressor as well.

Amana SBS Water and Ice maker issues

The water solenoid on the back of the refrigerator at the bottom is becoming clogged. There is only a very small hole in the diaphram of the valve. I suspect you have very hard water, or at least a fair amount of sediment in the water.
This valve will most likely need to be replaced by a qualified technician.
They sometimes can be cleaned, but it doesn't always work.

Maytag refrigerator, Model MSD2454GR

Your best bet is to shut the unit down for a while and let it defrost. You've probably got your box set too cold. 0-5 degrees on freezer...38-42 on fridge side. If your unit is not digital, use a regular outdoor thermometer, close the door for half an hour and then open to read it. Adjust accordingly. If too cold...you're using too much energy, too.
